begge = bothbegge to = both (of them)
“begge” is a determinative, which means it stands together with a noun, and which in one way or another decides the noun’s quantity and belonging. It can also describe further which specimen of the noun which is being spoken of. (this whole paragraph wasn’t really relevant, oops)
begge kakene = both cakes, both of the cakesbegge alternativene = both alternatives, both of the alternativesbegge fargene = both colors, both of the colorsbegge lektøyene = both toys, both of the toysbegge trærne = both trees, both of the treesbegge skyene = both clouds, both of the clouds
When you put “to” (which means “two”) behind “begge”, you get “begge to”, which could translate as “both of them”, or just “both” (optional).
Vil du se begge filmene?Do you want to watch both of the movies?
Ja, jeg vil se begge to.Yes, I want to watch both (of them).
The “to” is optional, as you can say just “begge” = “both” – just like in English.
Ja, jeg vil se begge.Yes, I want to see both.
Note that you cannot say “begge to filmene”, as it would be the same as “both of them movies”. Or well, it may actually work in English. But it sounds really weird in Norwegian!
