I get a lot of messages in my inbox asking where to learn the basics of magic. Whenever I get this message, I am stumped. It’s not that I don’t know... it’s the source material of where I learned all of this. I learned these concepts for years... and then I had to spend *years* unlearning what was gross and problematic.
When the beginner material to understand for western esoterics, occult, and witchcraft contain almost all of the following, what do you say?
- Appropriation and theft from poc cultures
- A misunderstanding of the actual content of said appropriated concepts
- Approaches to magic that are based in elitism, classism, ableism, misogyny, and sexism/genderism.
So far, I’ve been just defaulting to trying to teach my own concepts and understandings of magic. So if you receive an answer to this question where I seem unsure and stuck... it’s that I have no idea where to direct you to learn the things that I know sans completely unethical magical concepts that I had to meticulously reexamine after I learned why they were gross.
