Our big finale.  Classes were all over Sydney this week putting together all the skills they’ve learned over the term. These days we’re very inclined to use any medium which gets the look we want, from pure watercolour to big bold line. Mix it up we say. Take a look at some exciting results.

Week 8 has been a very enjoyable week. For our Intro classes, it’s been ‘Sketching from Memory’! Can you remember what a bicycle looks like? Of course you can. Ok, sketch one from memory. Oh dear, it has 2 wheels, and a seat, umm, maybe handle bars and pedals. But something isn’t right! So let’s bring out our little model bike, and we have an aha moment. Such clever machines and we’ve never really observed how they work.

The strezlitzia proved quite a good warmup sketch in the Studio this week. A chance to let go before starting on the subject of the week. Some gorgeous versions here.

Travel Sketchers were looking at Victorian or Federation style building facades. Mostly they are just one or two storeys above us, so not too tricky to look up at them. We love our old buildings and enjoy discovering deco details and a variety of embellishment from varying periods, not really noticed before. Quite different colours, lines and tones were coming through this week. Yet another way to sketch.

  EHS SYDNEY WEEK 10 TERM 4 ’16

Congratulations everyone. We are now at the end of 2016 and look how much sketching progress you’ve all made.

Your tutors have so enjoyed being with you as you’ve had your ups and downs (and we all do) and seeing how you learn from trying things out and seeing what works and why.

We’ve had wonderful compliments from you about how you had no idea that you could do anything like this. To sketch and how much you love it. And how much you love the new friends you make.

We’ve explored new ideas we’ve never tried before and everyone is excited.  We’ve developed our own unique style of travel sketching.

We each make this journey and every week our confidence grows. Our classes are planned around you learning something new in every class so you’ll always be motivated and challenged no matter how many years you’ve been with us.

For us it’s not about awards and glory. We just like to enjoy our sketching time with friends and feel happy with our results.

Weather this week has dictated where we spent our Week 10 end of term Adventure. Either high heat or poring rain. Each class has covered a fair bit of territory between Collaroy and Botanical Gardens and in between avoiding puddles or heat.

This gets you used to real deal travel sketching. You never know what the weather will be or what you’ll sketch. You make decisions on the run and sketch whats around you when you can. Sounds like life really!

All of this becomes part of your sketching diary. The place where you keep all your sketches and notes. All a wonderful journey about your life and memories. All created by you and totally unique.

Although our classes are over meantime we have lots to keep you busy.

This last week of Term 4 we reviewed our work and how amazingly everyone had progressed over the weeks.

Then a bit of fun applying pens, paint ( even nail varnish) all with the purpose of creating our own amazing personalised Christmas wrapping paper .

We all brought along a small object and sketched these. Lots of fun and something to make giving at Christmas just that bit more special.

A great year and look forward to seeing many of you continuing next year .  Happy Christmas and 2017 everyone :))  Tony

Girls Night in – Oct 19 ’16

Illustrated Recipes is always a popular night for the sketcher girls.

Most of them are excellent cooks and chefs so they know their food and what goes in it.

We did quite a few quick shortcut sketches of tricky ingredients on the board to find the simplest ways. It’s important to plan out your recipe well before beginning the real deal.

Each recipe was quite different and lots of laughs and discussions took place about how to layout the pages.

A few wines, some very tasty nibbles and all the recipes were coming together. Add some colour and a nice heading and there you have it.

Whew. Lots of thinking but very worthwhile. These can become gift cards or part of a collection of ones own illustrated recipes. Maybe even a little self published book. Food for thought indeed.

Back into our sketching for Term 4 and off to a great start too.

New Sketchers, and we’re proud to say the biggest intake of new students we’ve had, all survived their first nervous footsteps into the Studio, quite uncertain that this may be be the biggest mistake ever. Until we begin those first vital steps. Ahh so I can relax now, they say to themselves. And everyone does.

By the end of their very first class each one has produced several pages of very recognizable sketches. They look in wonderment and say ‘I can’t believe I did that’ Their world has just changed. It’s all going to be ok.

For our General Sketchers we plan the term so that each week you are learning something new in your sketching, and enjoying the different mediums and ideas we can help bring to your work.  This week it was about texture and tone. If you find yourself with just a pen and sketchbook – this is your answer. Lines, hatching, dashes, dots. All put down in a way to give tone and texture to your sketch.

Lots of practice in the Studio, seeing the demonstrations done then doing it yourself, means you’re able to go on location, find your subject, see where the tones go, and create a very different type of sketch. Bright clear colour is applied always in layers, but only in selected areas. All the sketches look so dramatic and interesting. Enjoy.

August 1 ’16.  ‘Taste of Sketching’ Workshop at Domaine PaulHuc. Fabrezan.

Aude and Florence had invited me to hold a Sketch Workshop at their domaine when I visited a couple of month’s ago. The two sisters happen to own this wonderful old family property. They are on a mission to renovate and convert the massive wine storage spaces to gites ( apartments) with a boutique and cafe as a meeting place and swimming pool set among the gardens.. It is now up and running and we will make this home for our Travel Sketch Holiday in June ’17.

Today was a chance for anybody living in the area to try Travel Sketching. What a lovely and diverse group we had. Some are established illustrators and painters while others were quite sure they had no hope. But everyone came because they wanted to try.

That’s where the magic occurs. We observed our subjects – 2 potted petunias – and planned where on the page they’d go. Then your first part of the jigsaw puzzle, find the first main shape. Using only black drawing pens, held up to keep you loose (no pencils here) we all established which flower that was and down it went. Wibbly wobbly, but it was the beginning. Follow the steps as I talk you through and before long – there on your page is your pot of flowers.

Right then ready for colour? YES. With a mixed collection of watercolour pencils, and a few wax crayons, we shared our colours and I showed how to use them.We made a few swatches from dark to light, getting used to holding our pencils sideways! more coverage and faster! Now the vital trick Leaving whites tops and sides.

Soon colours were flying and silence reigned. I talked about one colour over another, building brightness. We learned that we are not copying the subject. It’s there as reference for you to get your sketch done. Then apply colour. It can be any colours you like. If it looks good on the sketch then we’re happy. It’s an impression rather than it’s portrait.

Now that everyone had signed and dated their work, we did a ‘disconnect’ – step away and look at it with fresh eyes. I took each and we were amazed at how completely different they were. That’s your style. Embrace it. No one else can sketch as you do.

So we were all very happy and big smiles filled the room. We had a beautiful lunch, chatted to our neighbours, swapped emails and promised to do it again.

We will soon announce our EHS classes at La Cour des Arts Olonzac. There will be an Open Day very soon where everyone and their friends can drop in and see what we’ll be offering. Our Director and Head Tutor will be Mary-Lou Boardman, a very well established watercolorist and exhibiting artist. Mary-Lou and her husband are very much involved with bringing classes and creative events to the Arts centre in Olonzac.

Oh the excitement. Finally the day arrived when we could get back to the Studio and get sketching again, or for those new to sketching, those first brave lines.

Fresh from all the sleeps we’ve been counting, and that’s we tutors as well – we had one of our favourite subjects – fresh flowers.

Both New and General classes had either tropical coloured hibiscus, or Australian native blooms.

Tuesday classes starting next week will similar. We don’t say week to week what you’ll be doing – but the secret is out!

We were reminding ourselves to keep loose and free and hoot si mplify complex flower shapes.

New Sketchers anxiously began their first steps in observing and sketching hibiscus using only black pen!!  Your tutors were at your side to guide you, and before long, there on the page is a hibiscus arrangement. Wow. You didn’t believe it possible but you’ve begun to be a sketcher.

We had a lovely start this week with warm weather and everybody so enthusiastic to be back.
