The Fall of the House of Usher and Ecocriticism - Peter Barry
Autumn Studying Challenge 🍁
Today was a lovely lazy Sunday. I got a little work on my notes done, did some reading, and then went out in the green to read with a friend because the weather was so beautiful. I also made a test run of some baked oats and had some banana bread baked by a flatmate. Such an easy, nice day.
03 October: What is a good memory you have from autumn?
Marching band. I'm always so nostalgic for it this time of year.

The History of English Studies - Beginning Theory by Peter Barry
✨~Just English Major Things~✨
Some of the books I'll need for the next academic year came in from ThriftBooks today. As dry as they likely will be, I'm really excited to grow my collection of literary books and get some new knowledge and perspectives. I'm also excited to read in advance because I'm excited for the next school year and actually feeling optimistic about my future.

Book 72 of 2021: Beginning Theory
Beginning Theory: An Introduction to Literary and Cultural Theory by Peter Barry
(paperback, 330 pages; nonfiction, literary theory)
For what it is, this was a pretty interesting book. It was approachable and the explanations were understandable. Parts of it were surprisingly interesting, and I appreciated the practical approaches. It was a good overview, pretty thorough, but nothing special.
No triggers.
My final opinion: Enjoyable for what it is.
This book might not excite everyone, but damn if it's bit my favorite. I'm glad to have it back in my hands again.
The notion of literature giving pleasure will now seem an unremarkable sentiment, but Sidney's aim was the revolutionary one of distinguishing literature from other forms of writing, on the grounds that, uniquely, literature has as its primary aim the giving of pleasure to the reader, and any moral or didactic element is necessarily either subordinate to that, or at least, unlikely to succeed without it.
Peter Barry, Beginning theory
Remember some time ago when you recommended me Peter Barry’s Beginning Theory? Well, I found it for about $50 Mexican pesos (around 3 euros, if Google isn't lying) and I think this book is one of my greatest investments! Everything is well and clearly explained! Thank you so much!
That sounds like an incredible bargain, well done!
I’m glad you like Beginning Theory, I still consider it one of the best purchases I’ve made during my BA.
