With the emulator, if you have a USB game pad you can assign the direction keys under the settings menu somewhere, OR you can use your keyboard, whichever you prefer.
I also used this website to get my PS1 emulator and all of my Crash Bandicoot games, they have ROMs for pretty much every game you can think of, and emulators for nearly every gaming platform you can think of, too, it's the most magical site in the universe.
