Screening clips of IS beheadings will drive home danger of extremism, say delegates
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27, 2014:
Umno delegates have mixed feelings over Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s plan to screen videos of beheadings by Islamic State (IS) militants during his winding-up speech on Saturday.
When met by The Rakyat Post today, several delegates said the video screenings would remind delegates and the public on the need to have racial unity to prevent the country from becoming like Syria and Iraq.
“I think this step is needed so that there are no religious extremists in the party,” Sabak Bernam delegate Sallehuddin Mohd Isa said.
Explaining that the country holds various religious beliefs, Sallehuddin said the extent to which a person understood one’s religious beliefs was unknown.
“That is why we have to show them about the dangers of being extreme.”
It was earlier reported that Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, had said the screening would be a warning to delegates that similar threats could happen in Malaysia if people failed to unite.
Tapah delegate Safri Mohamad Salih said he supported Ahmad Zahid’s decision and described the move as a “good example”.
However, Hulu Selangor delegate Zulkarnain Abu Hanit said the move was a waste of time and not necessary.
“The duration of our meeting is very short and it is better if we use that time to discuss things that are more useful and beneficial to the party,” he said, adding that this particular issue should be discussed behind closed doors.
