Behind Glass
I keep my heart behind glass now not shattered, just…displayed like something fragile I don't trust myself to hold
I've learned the weight of "forever" when it turns into an echo how a voice can fade but still live in the walls of your chest
Love used to feel like running barefoot, reckless toward something warm and wild
Now it feels like standing at the edge of a frozen lake testing the ice with trembling steps listening for cracks that sound like memories
Because I remember how quickly warmth can turn to withdrawal how hands that once held me became the reason I couldn't sleep
I remember becoming smaller to fit inside someone else's chaos calling it devotion calling it fate
So now when someone smiles too softly when their voice lingers just long enogh to mean something
I step back
Not because I don't feel it God, I feel it Like a pulse I can't quiet like a song I already know the ending to
But I'm scared of the way love rewrites me how it convinces me to hand over every locked door and call it trust
I'm scared of how easily I forget the exits
Still… there's this quiet, stubborn part of me that hasn't learned
It watches the horizon hoping the next storm might be gentle
And I hate that hope how it flickers back to life every time someone says my name like it's something worth keeping
So I stand here heart behind glass cracked but still beating
wondering if love is something you survive or something you risk knowing exactly what it can take
"Over the years, I've thought of a thousand ways to kill you, Doctor..."
Editing of Chapter 11 for my New Earth audio novelization continues apace! I'm hoping to get it done by the end of the month, and have already got some new action-packed cover art planned...
Until then, though, here's an older, creepier piece that was commissioned last year - of Rose/Cassandra seen from the Doctor's POV behind glass, after she's just sealed him inside the disease pod in Intensive Care.
