World of wonder

A school mural brightens up The Alabama Expat’s Beijing neighborhood.

Elephants, pandas and giraffes seem to burst through an exterior wall of our neighborhood elementary school. The animals, amid a lush forest setting, are part of a colorful mural that brightens the rather bland, nondescript building. 

While school is out for the summer, the mural offers a playful reminder that it’s just a couple of months before the young ones return in the fall.

A shiny sculpture of a laughing man in a Beijing mall is a bit unsettling, especially as he’s sitting on what at first glance looks like a commode.

Hello, doggie!

A solemn little boy (who looks like he needs a nap) poses for a photo with a giant painted dog in Beijing Sanlitun community. The area is an expat mecca with its restaurants and bars, plus there are a lot of pop up art exhibits like the dog, one of several placed in the vicinity.

Pink bubbles brighten up Taikoo Li

A little girls doesn’t seem as impressed with the Bubble Magicians art display in Beijing.

Local artists Liu Yang and Yang Lu’s art installation, Bubble Magicians, was a pastel centerpiece in the main courtyard at Taikoo Li  South in Beijing’s Sanlitun neighborhood this summer. It was among four art pieces shoppers enjoyed as they walked through the major retail thoroughfare and entertainment area popular with expats.

More modern art in Beijing

Shades of blue - The Alabama Expat’s favorite color - dominate this piece at the Grand Summit in Beijing.

The Grand Summit shopping center in Beijing’s Liangmaqiao community features many new contemporary artists on its first floor. It’s a great way for artists to get exposure, but it’s also a frustration for foreigners (like me) who don’t know enough Mandarin to read who the artists are or what their work portrays.

In a way, perhaps that better, as it leaves the interpretation strictly up to the uninformed observer.   

"NYC DOORS” are about the only words recognized by an English speaker in this plum and purple piece on display at the Grand Summit in Beijing.
