Oh, Canada?
So it seems this has become something of a phenom. https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/hong-kong-student-living-in-toronto-strikes-a-nerve-on-twitter-with-eerie-observations-about-canadian-life
True facts, obviously. But we have here a country where humans live almost entirely on the edges, like matter along the surface of the vast bubbles of empty space that make up the foam form of our universe. The central wilderness is largely unknown, cold and dark, howling and hungry. People vanish, people come back different, if they come back at all. In cities, surprisingly modern and clean, cosmopolitan in our wealth and tastes, we pretend the wild isn’t just beyond our sights, but the fear of it keeps us in our safe pockets. Traveling from city to city takes us through the memory of our forebears and how they tried so hard to tame it.
This isn’t Europe, this isn’t England, where every square mile of earth has been sculpted by human hands, this land is still unknown to us, it has kept its true soul, and it does not care for our intervention.
We know this, and every time someone suggests we encroach upon its territory, we shiver.
I just want to clear things up about something that someone asked me today. I find this ironic especially after a conversation I had with @christieanne last night. The question was....what is being Canadian? Or rather what qualifies a person to be considered Canadian? A fantastic question seeing as Canadian is not an ethnicity. I think there are many things that would qualify a person as being Canadian and usually I hate to say that it's solely the citizenship but I believe that it is a huge portion of what it is being Canadian. I also believe that living in Canada, being exposed to both Canadian values and lifestyle, and, although many people don't believe this exists, being exposed to Canadian culture. Canadian values, at least to me and what I've witnessed living in Canada, are openness, multiculturalism, democracy, diplomacy, equality, bilingualism...and as I was told by a good many, and laughed hard, non-dickishness. You can always become Canadian! This I believe with my whole heart seeing as my mother sought this out and achieved it. She still has a thick accent but she's just as Canadian as the next. However, I don't believe you can say your truly Canadian if you have never lived in Canada, intimately experienced Canadian lifestyle (schooling, community, university, sports, etc), and/or have Canadian citizenship. The good thing about being Canadian is that you can always become Canadian and bring your own zest to being so. I've also been informed just a few seconds ago that it's also communal hatred of the Toronto Maples Leaves.
Mercari can burn.
