Monday 27 May is Memorial Day so my host parents don’t have to work then. They stopped working earlier on Friday and drove to see their family in Houston.
I am staying in DFW (Dallas - Fort Worth) for a change because my Belgian friend Hazel is visiting me here!! She is a friend from my volleyball team back home. She is currently studying in Boston with EF and with the long weekend we decided to meet up. I’m so happy!
On Friday afternoon, early evening, we arrived at our hotel in Fort Worth. I had never been to that city and since it’s supposed to be THE place to be to see cowboys, I wanted to show Hazel too.
First we went swimming at the hotel’s pool and catched up on how we’ve been for the past months. We hadn’t seen each other in a year I think, so we had a lot to discuss.
In the evening we went to see a rodeo. It was very spectacular! First time for both of us and we were really impressed. I finally got to see some real cowboys and cowgirls! Every now and then we felt bad for the animals but I guess it’s all part of the show.
Afterwards we wandered around the neighbourhood for a bit...
... and discovered a small fair.
We ended up at Billy Bob’s - supposedly the largest honky tonk in the world. The place is very big, true, but honestly, I was disappointed. The actual dance floor is so small! I’m sure Red River’s dance floor in Dallas is bigger!
Despite my crushed fantasy, we still had an amazing time. There was a live band playing “Shane Smith and the Saints” and a lot of good dancers were two stepping. Just enjoying the music and watching people dance made me feel so good! After a while I got jealous, so I asked someone to dance with me. Hazel got asked to dance too! We had a blast! I enjoyed it so much. Too bad I didn’t have cowboy boots to make me go smoother.
