After hearing that Russian River distributed to Philly, I made my way over there.. found a place that had Damnation, their Belgian gold. Despite the price being absolutely ludicrous, I bought one.
A lot of things call to mind Duvel- both Belgian golds, both devil-related, and the similarities continue once the bottle is open.
A- a hazy honey color, with a thick white persistent head. strong lacing around the lip of my glass.
S- certainly true to style. Very sweet with honey, some banana, spiciness of the yeast definitely apparant. also- a hint of cherry tartness, and a funkiness like an old library. if you can't tease out the tang of the cherry as separate, it would be easy to consider the whole smell as a musty, almost mothball aroma. but look for that sour edge and try to separate it.
T- Sweet upfront, and just the most miniscule of contribution of that cherry sourness. All of that dissipates quickly though, making wasy for an ending that is exceedingly dry, leaving a mouth-tingling feeling and finally a faint bitter aftertaste.
M- It feels good. Good consistency, nicely carbonated.
O- it's a belgian gold. it's good. it's not incredible. The dryness at the finish is actually somewhat unappealing to me, as your mouth actually feels dry and is left with nothing more than the bitterness as if you just ate the hops directly. Honestly, I would trade this for a Duvel any day. And i'd save money doing it.
It is clearly a well-made beer, but the finish isn't for me. I was caught between a 7 and 8 of 10, but I am going to have to round down.
America, you are doing it wrong! LA chouffe in every bar, same price as a bud light at home. Allow me to rate:
A-golden, clear. Thick persistent head with beautiful lacing. Served in tulip.
S-light, banana-ness of a tripel, phenolic pepper-iness strong
T-spicy predominates. Refreshing with the lightness and bubblegum taste of a tripel, but ends very dry. I’m guessing it’s a belgian gold based on that (like delirium, everybody’s go-to “ahmahzing” beer)
M-perfect feel and co2
O-a strong example of a great beer in a style I’ve never been particularly fond of, nevertheless excellent 8/10
Whereas this dommelsch is as bad as big bang theory;doubtlessly also aimed at people who suck! I had something better for that, but la chouffe got me drunk
