belknap class strike cruiser, type 2 cruiser
heralding the end of an era started by the constitution, the belknap pioneered the dual-coil system that would, alongside the next level warp core tested on the gemini class, usher in the refit era, and the second half of the klingon cold war. able to stay in warp 6 for over a week without need to stop thanks to switching between multiple coils in a single nacelle. a new computer system, designed by the recovered dr. daystrom, could quickly siphon power to and from different systems depending on alert level, making the class far more responsive than previous ones. the ship had a form of automation that was far more difficult to crack by romulan and klingon code breakers, thanks to this new computer. in addition, a new type of armor plating was tested on the class, resulting in the classic eggshell white being replaced by greys and shades of blue in its base metal coloration. these improvements would go on to found the refit era, and would be fully launched by the completed belknap ‘refit’, along side the enterprise class.
