Pen and ink illustration and lettering of Leonard Nimoy’s last tweet. Made this for my grandmother, it’ll be on its way across the ocean soon. . I was heavily inspired by Art Nouveau for this, a style I’ve loved since I was a kid but that’s always been challenging to execute. Feel like it went pretty well here. . The tree is stylized but still organic in shape. The lettering is funky and unusual as it ought to be for Art Nouveau. Only the bottoms of certain letters are given extra weight, giving each line an anchored, horizontal feel. I snuck in a few ligatures where I could. The word ‘Garden’ uses stylized Romans for a classy look and to give contrast to the more unusual body. . Challenges: - breaking up the quote into lines that allow for easy reading while still maintaining good layout and center alignment. - Lettering every single letter rather than using a calligraphic script was a ton of work (although worth it in the end, as an effect like this couldn’t be reached with calligraphy). - Being true to Art Nouveau, rather than going back to Victorian styles that I am more familiar and comfortable with.
