IT’S HAPPENING! From today until next Monday, get any of my typefaces at no less than 40% off! I do not offer discounts at any other point in the year (with the exception of new releases), so if you’ve been considering buying one of my fonts, now would be a good time. In fact, all prices will be raised in 2023. (at New Orleans, Louisiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClG80oeLvYY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Ever since Bonkus came out, I have been pondering an ultra-fat variation. This is MegaBonkus, a spin-off display version of the classic Bonkus we all know and love. It changes a few letterforms—for instance, terminals are now exclusively vertical (instead of perpendicular to the stroke), to help letters fill more white space and avoid awkward gaps. A couple of stylistic sets can really change the feel of the font, as the first slide demonstrates, with a transition from the pure “bent tube” forms to more common grotesque-ish shapes. Ah! All gibberish. MegaBonkus, coming sometime. I’m too busy to work on it rn. (at New Orleans, Louisiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CaIEsVrlKDB/?utm_medium=tumblr
Wow, a new release! Schmaltzy is about as relaxed as a blackletter can get. It contains not a single sharp edge, only smooth curves flowing gleefully into one another. This concept was once applied by Oswald Cooper to his Roman typeface, Cooper Oldstyle, the most famous weight of which saw popular success under the name “Cooper Black”. It could be said that Schmaltzy is to a blackletter what Cooper Oldstyle is to a Roman: “Cooper Blackletter”. But that’s a bit reductive: Schmaltzy is a lot more than that. It is a modernization of classical blackletter faces, legible to today’s reader and with far fewer connotations than other blackletters. If you’re looking for a fresh, friendly, and highly usable take on the genre, look no further. Ultimately based on calligraphic hands, Schmaltzy merges a weight and width-axis into one: a nib size axis. As the weight goes up, the typeface expands in width considerably too, which can help you fit your type more easily, as well as allow for dramatic contrasts. By default, Schmaltzy’s characteristics are more vanilla: the standard capitals are more akin to Roman forms, which makes them easily recognizable to today’s eyes, and appropriate for use in an all-caps setting. However, with a click of the button, they can be switched to beautiful, ornamental fraktur caps–great for a more historic or fantasy vibe. Wanchy is for sale on my website, 30% off for the first week, applied automatically. That’s about the only discount you can expect until black friday. Schmaltzy is available as a full family, with included variable font, or as single styles. (at New Orleans, Louisiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CYZWwJwryto/?utm_medium=tumblr
In the occasional spare hour, I’ve been drawing this calligraphic Roman with exaggerated sharp strokes. Might keep it to a single weight, maybe add an italic. We’ll see. (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXOrNRUF-4A/?utm_medium=tumblr

✨T-Shirts for pre-sale at discounted rate, all profits going to the Pointe-au-Chien Indian Tribe!✨ The subject: Often nicknamed “The Big Easy” in tourism ads, New Orleans is often the very opposite. Infrastructure sinking into the ground, rising costs of living, a fragile service-based economy, corrupt politics, unyielding hurricanes. The list goes on. And yet, there’s nowhere else we’d rather be. There is something about this humid, smelly swamphole that, for better or worse, is not found elsewhere on earth. Many cliche ramblings about the mystic romance of New Orleans have been written (including that often misattributed quote about rather living here in rags than owning the entire state of Ohio). I am not going to outdo that. If you know, you know. The cause: Hurricane Ida has hit our neighbors in the Southern Swamps far harder than New Orleans. One of the areas hit particular hard is Pointe-Aux-Chenes, home to a Houma Indian tribe named Pointe-Au-Chien. No better aid than direct mutual aid. Pre-order one of these T-shirts on my website (Link in Bio), and every penny of profit will be sent to the Pointe-au-Chien Indian Tribe’s PayPal. The tribe will use money for restoration of their home, as well as fighting for the preservation of the Louisiana coastline. The product: Custom hand-lettering in a Cooper Black-ish style, but even fatter and with swashy caps. Check that “ffi” ligature. Will be printed in a nice burgundy on creme, to really drive home the ‘70s vibe. T-shirts will be made at the Inkwell Press right here in New Orleans, on 100% cotton American Apparel shirts. Pre-order available until Thursday September 23rd. All shirts ordered on pre-order are $20 a piece, plus shipping (local pickup available). Shirts ordered after the pre-order period will be $25. First orders will be going out early October. If you can’t afford to purchase, or think the design of this shirt is ugly, sharing this post would also be very welcome. You can also donate directly to the Tribe on their website, “pactribe.tripod.com”. (at New Orleans, Louisiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CT7pNjMr9vl/?utm_medium=tumblr
A fauxsaic about the two unavoidable certainties of life. I did attempt to not pay taxes for a few years, but the feds soon caught on, as did the great state of Louisiana. Death, I’ve managed to avoid thus far—we’ll see how that goes. Drawn in procreate, took about 14 hours. Thanks @stopkatie for helping with the colors (not my strong suit, although I’m getting a little better at it slowly). Swipe for timelapse vid, close-up, and alt color scheme. To allow super-tight leading, none of Libido’s glyphs extend beyond the base or cap-line. To achieve a black texture, each glyph has as little white space as possible. These two parameters made diacritics and other modified letters an interesting challenge, but I’m pleased with the results. Any letter with a diacritic is smushed vertically to make space (a precedent set by Alfred Roller in 1903, although he only had the umlaut to worry about). Libido is available on my website, linkinbio, ✨30% off until Tuesday.✨ (at New Orleans, Louisiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CS181Zirpq2/?utm_medium=tumblr
New release: Libido! Take a 30% off release promo, for the next four days only (applied automatically). Libido is a unicase display typeface, inspired by the work of 1960’s psychedelic poster artist Wes Wilson (who himself took a note from early 1900’s Viennese artist Alfred Roller). Each letter is a rectangle, with a few elegant cut-outs that give it the shape of a letter. Their minimal exteriors allow for the letters to easily be stretched, warped, and distorted. Before Libido, the only way to achieve this look was custom hand-lettering. Now, thanks to the magic of variable fonts and some hard work by yours truly, it can be as easy as pie! Libido’s width axis morphs letters from narrow to extremely wide, and its optical sizing axis allows each letter to look (relatively) legible both big and small. But more importantly, when combining these axes together, the width axis will allow each line to be as wide as the next, and the optical sizing axis will help you to achieve uniform contrast. Wes Wilson couldn’t have done it better himself. However, Libido goes further than imitating the work of artists past. Besides the traditional “Smooth” style, Libido has a “ragged” style which removes all curves. The ragged style is a unique take on the genre, and has a rather different vibe from the smooth cut. While it carries the same benefits—fully variable width and optical sizing—it doesn’t carry the same psychedelic connotations as its counterpart, and can therefore be employed in new and interesting settings. Libido comes equipped with a wide character set (probably wider than necessary—are you really going to need a μ or a § in this style?), which includes Latin Plus language support. There is also a fine selection of ornamental glyphs, which can be used in patterns, as border decorations, or otherwise. Available and testable on my website, link in bio :) (at New Orleans, Louisiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSzhgt3F8tW/?utm_medium=tumblr
For the uninitiated, oldstyle figures are to numerals what lowercase is to letters. They have sticky-outty bits (better known as ascenders and descenders), which help them blend in better in lowercase texts. This opposed to lining figures, which sit on the same line as capitals and don’t stick out above or below. Lining figures tend to be default in most typefaces these days. Note that there’s a pattern to which figures stick out in oldstyle figures: 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9 descend, while 6 and 8 ascend. An exception to this is found in didones, where often the 3, 4, and 5 ascend instead of descent. Here’s a few imperfect sketches I did, mostly for practice, of oldstyle figures in a garalde, a Blackletter, a geometric sans, and a fatface. I include oldstyle figures in most of my typefaces, primarily because they’re fun to draw, but people may find them useful too. https://www.instagram.com/p/CSKcr80rDiX/?utm_medium=tumblr
Yes, I drew this after a scroll down @jedchisholm’s web page. Since the lad is always appropriating American culture with his diner fan-art, I decided to turn the tables on him with this fictional fish ‘n’ chips logo. How ya like that, Jed??
