PONO was launched in 2003 by sisters Joan Goodman and Barbara Barnett. For the past decade, Joan has designed each collection, while Barbara has run the business. Together they have cultivated a reputation for producing jewelry with an artistic, timeless sense of luxury, durability and originality. PONO is the Hawaiian word for righteousness in all its forms: quality; morality; goodness; virtuousness; in perfect order. It also carries an implication of belonging within the realm of necessary and beneficial.
about the designer
Meditating upon prototypes in her midtown-Manhattan office, dressed in the classically understated manner of certain fashion editors, Joan Goodman makes an instant impression: kind, engaged, passionate, jumping from topic to topic, as designers brimming with ideas often do. Goodman, the designer behind PONO, a New York City-based jewelry company, is just back from Italy, where she makes trips to design and produce her critically acclaimed and increasingly popular line.
JOAN, WHY DID YOU LAUNCH PONO?
My sister Barbara Barnett and I had already been running our family’s button business for years. Over time, I got to know and came to love certain materials, like horn and resin. I would find myself thinking about ways to work them into jewelry. One day, I told one of my Italian manufacturers, who also happened to be a dear friend, about my ideas. He said, “If that is what you want to do, then you must do it, and you must do it immediately. Come with me--right now.” And a week later, there I was, in his factory, working on my first line.
Karan Dannenberg:
"I love great fashion and I am passionate about creating the perfect look for woman of all ages."
I started Karan Dannenberg clothier in 1990. As a wardrobe consultant I worked out of my home selling and specializing in women's travel wardrobes. Clients would come by referral to buys clothes for their travels. After traveling to Minneapolis, Sun Valley, Palm Beach, Boca Raton, and other cities setting up trunk shows, I realized there was a need for easy, washable, and packable clothing.
After doing several leadership courses with Landmark Education, my dream of opening a store front came true! In 1997, I opened my boutique in the heart of fashionable Belltown in Seattle. "I had a vision of someday dressing women like my mom dressed me."Karan Dannenberg Clothier has become a destination for women across the world. Our customers visit us from Istanbul, CA, NY, MN, FL, OH, Canada, and Alaska. We have built personal relationships with our fabulous clientele who continue to shop with us for years.
We are dedicated to customer service and help women of all ages, and sizes look terrific whether for travel, work, or a special event.
