New signings

Bolton announced their first signings of the summer today with the captures of Ben Amos and Gary Madine.

The signing of ex Manchester United goalkeeper Amos was widely predicted following the early summer exits of Adam Bogdan and Andy Lonergan.  Amos impressed all in his loan spell last season and didn’t appear to exhibit any major weaknesses in his game.  At 25, he certainly has his best years ahead of him, although there will be some question marks over his lack of experience as the number one goalkeeper at a football club.  Neil Lennon would be well advised to sign an experienced number two to push Amos and provide adequate back up should there be any issues with form or fitness.  At present, Bolton only have inexperienced back up in Ross Fitzsimmons and Harry Campbell.  The four year deal offered to Amos, if all goes well, should offer the club some protection against losing the player for nothing if he is successful.

The signing of Gary Madine is more of a gamble.  While Madine should offer a physical and mobile presence up front, he doesn’t really have any track record of consistent goal scoring at Championship level, with the bulk of his career goals coming in League One.  His career has also suffered from what we might euphemistically call ‘personal issues’ which saw him spend a spell in prison.  Madine did earn some plaudits last season playing in the abject Blackpool team that got relegated but there are concerns if he is good enough to replace the goals lost by the departures of Adam le Fondre, Craig Davies and potentially Eidur Gudjohnsen.  The manager will certainly be looking to add further striking options to the squad to assist Madine.

Also announced was the retention of Darren Pratley on a three year deal.  Last season, Pratley experienced a dramatic upturn in form following the appointment of Neil Lennon and it has to be hoped that this continues. Lennon will regard Pratley as a key signing both in terms of retaining an experienced member of the squad and as someone that offers the ability to play as a box to box midfielder, a quality lacking in other members of the midfield.  The only real surprise was the length of the deal offered by the club for someone over the age of 30.

"Being a United fan, I’ve always believed I can play for Manchester United and always aspired to be a Manchester United player. You could say Victor's arrival was the final nail in the coffin. Pre-season, I was told I was number two. With the cup games, if I’d got a sniff of that, that would have made it worthwhile sticking around for.
