Ben & Max

In CW4, it’s mentioned that Ben is a city kid who went to a upper school—tall and very neatly dressed. So I designed him in a clean school uniform. And since CW4 takes place over twenty years after the trilogy, I figured their clothing and technology would have evolved as well.

He has a typewriter, a blue-glowing screen, and a sound-producing device, so I gave him this very cyber-tech mechanical setup. He can lean on the typewriter to input commands or even move it around to change their position. The screen is detachable too—he can take it off and use it like a tablet.

For the typewriter design, I referenced a one-handed keyboard. I originally wanted to make it more like a stenotype machine, but it doesn’t seem like his keyboard works that way.

Ben can’t speak, but it seems like he can convert what he types into electronic speech, so I added this device around his neck.

For Max, he’s described as short, round, and pretty carefree. He’s more of a countryside kid, so I designed his outfit to be practical, easy to work in, and comfortably casual.

I gave him a bomber jacket because I feel like he’d think that kind of thing looks really cool. Plus, my CW4 Todd design wears a similar jacket, so Max might be trying to imitate Todd’s style.

There’s also a patch on the front of his jacket featuring the New World and the two moons—the classic symbol from the CW3 cover.

What Patrick Ness says about Ben:

“I feel like Ben is a glimpse of those boys we see more and more these days – which is great – boys who say I love you to their male friends. That kind of boy who’s learning that there is more to a man’s emotional life than he’s been allowed in the past. Give him a chance to be the good guy, to love his brother, and he will. I found that really moving.”
