The Mayor smooths the hair back from my forehead and holds his hand there as he pours water from a pitcher all over my hair. The water’s warm, way warmer than the water we get for washing up at the bell tower, and my ears are still cold from the ride and for a second it feels so good I forget everything that went down in this room.  Just for a second.  “Those days are behind us, Todd,” the Mayor says, pouring more water over my hair. “You have nothing to fear from me. I’m just trying to help you.” I breathe thru it. I breathe thru it and don’t say nothing.
