Allie Kral Leaves Yonder Mountain String Band
- “I need to focus more on my family and my mental health and wellness,” fiddler says
Allie Kral has amicably departed Yonder Mountain String Band.
“I need to focus more on my family and my mental health and wellness,” the fiddler, who joined the band in 2014, said in a statement.
“The touring life is both magical and challenging in the best of times, and being able to continue at my own pace will support me in this.”
The remaining members “wish (Kral) the very best” and hope to play together again.
“Allie Kral is our sister; we love her and we support her in her decision to prioritize her family and her mental health,” YMSB said in a statement. “We look forward to playing music in the future together when the opportunities are there.”
The group, whose lineup has shifted since Jeff Austin’s 2014 departure, will continue with a “rotating lineup of special guests” through 2022. The Lil Smokies’ Jake Simpson will play nine shows with the band in August and September.

Song Review: Yonder Mountain String Band - “Into the Fire”
“Into the Fire” is the lead single from Yonder Mountain String Band’s recorded-in-quarantine Get Yourself Outside. And the remote genesis of the song is apparent in the solos that sound spliced rather than passed.
But that isn’t the track’s biggest issue; in fact, it’s charming in a momento-of-lockdown kind of way. The biggest problem is the cliché-ridden lyrics about pans and fires, being high and dry, clearing smoke and fallen ashes.
Despite all this, “Into the Fire” is a sneak peak at YMSB 3.0 with new mandolinist Nick Piccininni on the mic and his bandmates in close harmony.
Uptempo and more traditional than progressive, “Into the Fire” runs a scant 2:38 and stands a strong chance of being a much-better song when stretched out in the live setting.
The album arrives Feb. 25, 2022.
