Kelsey Excelsior 5x8
I know, I know, I've been super neglectful again. For that, my sincerest apologies! On a far better note, it's all for good reason! Today I just invested in my first press, a sweet little Kelsey Excelsior Model P. After a quick cross reference, I learned my press was made in January 1955-almost 60 years old! I promise to update soon, hopefully with an update look and more great news and picture.

So, for the past few weeks I've been putting together a business card for a friend.I'm having the greatest time designing this! It's going to look awesome when it's finished. But alas, I spoke a little too soon with my last post and the lock-up wasn't as stellar as I thought. Fussing with 8pt. font for days at a time and making no progress was getting old so last night I decided to take a temporary break. After printing with Tony the other day, I was really inspired to take on the new poster press in the shop! Last winter/spring time I carved a block that I never got the chance to print so this was the perfect opportunity to do so. My printing sesh with Tony also inspired me to try my own hand at a split fountain! I found some copper and magenta in the cabinet and went to town. I really want to develop this more, it's got some great potential but for now, this was a great breakaway from business.

So I'm notorious for being terrible at updating social media/responding to emails, so my apologies for not keeping things up to date! Anyways, another local print shop donated a larger poster press to the IPRC recently, and I had the pleasure of figuring out how to use it with Tony! Maybe you're thinking to yourself, Ben, shouldn't you already know how to use this new press? Looks pretty straight forward. Here's the kicker-it's self inking! The press itself isn't automatic like a Vandercook, but there's a set of rollers in the carriage that are attached to a crank handle, which when in motion, causes the rollers to evenly distribute ink. Goodbye brayers! Hello self inking Reynolds Press! So Tony and I set some type and made this pretty badass poster. We even attempted a split fountain. Though the picture isn't the best, there's definitely some gold on the top and bottom of "Set A Goal" and "Your Soul"

SOoO, up to this point, I've explained very little about what PRESS: Letterpress As A Public Art Project is. Lucky for you guys, I've thrown the link in.Anyways, PRESS is a hybrid studio, gallery, and teaching lab, where I'm one of two interns.

A Printing Time Capsule
So this is going to be the start of a new project, a goal hopefully spanning the next few years of my development and growth as not only an artist but a printmaker.
That first batch of prints was some of the work that I did my last two years of college. Since graduating I've discovered letterpress and bookmaking. (Fall 2012-Spring 2013)
Everything from here on out will be heavily saturated with type and my work with Press: Letterpress As A Public Art Project.
