Charles: Yeah, I can see why you'd be upset. That was my sarcastic voice.
Ben: Sounds a lot like your regular voice.
Charles: I've been told that.
I have read some hot takes (which I don’t disagree with but let’s not get into the weeds) and I’m so curious if they’re actually hot takes.
This is not regarding even the actual conversation I had with someone last night which is way more fun hot takes and not “well I think this character is actually a horrible person.”
But I’m curious where people draw the morally grey line in this series. I think I have to make this an actual survey monkey or something to be done completely anonymously with more deliberate questions but I’m not going to do that right now. I’m laying in bed 😂
Which of the following do you consider to be the most innocent action, assuming that killing is generally accepted as “wrong”:
Killing in self-defense (physical)
Killing/Abusing under order (or compulsion)
Killing/Abusing due to being a cliche statistic
Killing in defense of someone else (physical)
Killing in self-defense (abstract)
Killing in defense of other(s) (abstract)
Killing/Torturing humans for some form of consumption
To clarify:
“Physical” means against physical harm.
“Abstract” means, in one case, killing to keep a secret. Like if Dumbledore goes and murders a muggle who saw magic. Idk why that was the example.
Mercyverse meaningless rambling
Because I am a wet blanket and an emotional vampire
I have been thinking about PB’s handling of Ben versus Mary Jo and something don’t sit right with me about it since I reread his short story.
To me this series gauges a characters worth based on how much they love Mercy and how much Mercy likes them, and Ben and Mary Jo kinda proved that to me in a way.
Ben was abused by his father and his mother allowed it which lead him to hate women but he doesn’t seem to have a problem with men or authority figures that are just men….idk. His trauma causes him to become an abuser basically because he ends up helping this other werewolf in London assault and eventually SA women but kills the guy later on and gets sent to the US?? (I feel like he would have just been killed for causing trouble and being a criminal that is wanted by human authorities??? but okay second chances ig) and Adam who has a YOUNG DAUGHTER takes him in….(he also gets w Mercy which also threatens his daughters safety) Someone gaf about Jesse’s mortality ***challenge impossible***
anyways, Ben lowkey gets more page time and is in a better relationship with people and Mercy way before Mary Jo and becomes Mercy’s friend sorta. He doesn’t seem to face much trouble at all from others based on his past as a guy who hunted down women and let someone beat the fuck outta them and pretended it was his mom that was getting beat up. Like that’s some serious fucked up shit. And now hes just Ben, the lil rascal with a dirty mouth ahh dont trust him around your sisters aha 🥴
Because he’s not a threat to A/M’s relationship bc he’s not Mercy’s type and a Man, he gets into her inner circle and trauma bonds w/ her and Mercy is so not like other girls he ‘associates her with safety’ and Mercy in turn really likes him and hes very loyal to Adam which makes him a character that appears a lot more than any of the other women wolves in the books. He didn’t like Warren at first, but now they are friends and he also likes Stefan
Mary Jo has been a firefighter since they let women be firefighters and she’s alluded to be a feminist. However, it’s stated that she doesn’t want Warren in the pack. Idk if that means she’s homophobic or what but that’s what I am sorta assuming. Which is shitty obviously even though its not said outright I’m going with it for this post. Everyone seems fine with Warren now, so idk if its still an issue I don’t think it’s been a plot point for a few books now. She has been used as a punching bag by PB so badly I’m assuming someone named Mary Jo pissed her off and this is her voodoo doll or something lol Mary Jo has died, gotten her shit kicked in, recently got snatched momentarily by some snow giant or something, had to dig through literal shit to rescue someone ect and she’s now aboard the Mercy train bc its get on and get run over ig.
Mary Jo doesn’t have much page time because she’s a woman lol. No but fr she is kinda in love with Adam, is Team Christy, and hates Mercy for getting Adam and not being Christy even though she doesn’t have a good reason its just the way shes written for stupid drama and C-Plot bullshit the same as Auriele and a bit of Honey. She doesnt get to be Mercy’s friend bc she loves Adam and cannot fawn over Mercy they way other men do. There’s also this stupid thing where she JUST NOW thinks she can be a good person and hero because of what Mercy did on the bridge and NOT the fact that she’s been a FIREFIGHTER for god knows how long and also its never been mentioned that shes had a murderous rampage or anything-so why does she have the stupid oh im a monster complex? (hint: its just so that she has to thank mercy for something)
Honestly she should be friends with Mercy before Ben considering she’s also in a male dominated field and probably gets the same shit Mercy does from people about it. She’s a small woman which means other werewolves are dangerous to her as well also so there’s another thing they have in common and could be friends through sparring or something but we only ever see adam and mercy train together ughh
If we need Mercy to be on a pedestal 24/7 then fuck it we could do something like she shows Mary Jo that the dislike of Warren is really stupid bc hes a great guy and adams best friend and kyle is cool as fuck and helps people just like she does in his own way and she shows Mary Jo The Light. Thats how that shouldve gone down instead of the absolute sausage fest that is Mercy’s weird harem
Ben being super fucking misogynistic in the books and short story doesn’t inherently bother me its just that we are supposed to root for him and see his improvement but like its not working for me. He is representation for male SA victims but its not good representation and hes just continuing the cycle and is somehow given a second chance when in Kara’s short story (13 year old youngest ever to survive) she has to prove herself on the spot or be put to death like why does Ben get to live after all the violent crimes he helped commit? the laws are supposed to be super clear but they are always being bent and never for someone who necessarily deserves it. If he were human he could go to jail and get therapy but alas werewolves dont do jail or therapy
Mary Jo gets not even crumbs and the author does her sooo dirty like REF DO SOMETHING LET HER GET UP GODDAMN. She didn’t like Warren which is super fucking shitty especially because she definitely knows what its like to be discriminated against but compared to Ben she’s never done any violent crime her only crime is being a non-main character woman in an Urban Fantasy genre lol
Adam: Ben! Get your hairy ass into my office. Now! [storms off] Pack: OOHH... Ben: Every single one of you knows my ass isn't hairy, yet none of you spoke up. Ben: And I will never forgive you. [leaves] Sherwood: He's right. We're cowards.
Ben Shaw
Mercy: Your existence is confusing
Ben: How so?
Mercy: Your presence is annoying, but the thought of anything bad happening to you is upsetting.
