Hello, are there ways/hcs that you have for Yang in your fics that arent always explicitly stated?
Well, this is pretty broad, so I guess I’ll approach this in terms of
How to Write Yang Xiao Long (according to me):
As an initial note, I derive a lot of my characterization from RWBY’s soundtrack, not from the show, as I feel that’s where their personalities are best distilled.
- Yang believes, in Volumes 1-3, that she is invincible in a fight. There is an insecurity underneath this: that she can’t win without her semblance. It’s her pain that gives her strength, and it is always lying just under the surface - because she could need it at any time.
This is textual as far as “I Burn” is concerned, and that song repeats (with various remixes) over and over in almost every fight Yang ever has. Every time it plays, she wins - with one exception. A half-speed “I Burn” plays as her arm is cut off by Adam, flipping the meaning of “I Burn” from a feeling of invincibility to a feeling of collapse. “I Burn” never plays again. That version of Yang died there.
Yang is fire personified, but her relationship to fire changes throughout the series, as most easily noted from her various theme songs and OPs. Fire is wild passion, but it destroys itself. Fire eats away at the fuel that gives it strength until there’s nothing left. And, as noted above, Yang’s world burned with Beacon. The fire in her burned away her heart.
When Yang regained her strength, two things happened. First, she recognized that she needed to fight without her semblance - without tapping into that well of pain. She needed to be calm, and keep the things close to her from burning. But she struggled with this control, and when her control slipped, it was even more destructive than before. The moments where she trembles are where she is trying to maintain control despite the desire to ‘Ignite’ and destroy everything.
We see her finally get control of the fire inside her in her fight with Adam. She struggles to keep it down, but she holds the fire inside her until just the moment she needs it, then lets it explode all at once. This is the conclusion of one of her major arcs as the personification of fire: she controls her semblance now, instead of being controlled by it (or her pain, which her semblance represents).
Lesson: Yang is someone struggling to control herself. Everything about her is in excess. She sees herself in the wild, destructive nature of fire. She is someone reborn, like a phoenix.
- Yang is in love with Blake because she sees herself and the people she loves in her.
If you break down Blake’s traits (being haunted by her past, seeking redemption, always searching for a brighter future, a bit horny, idealistic, self-destructive, and self-flagellating), almost all of them are familiar themes from Ruby, Qrow, Tai, and Summer.
She initially didn’t like her very much, but rapidly grew to care for her after learning about Blake’s past. If I had to point to a specific moment where she realized she loved Blake, it would definitely have to be when she and Blake got into an argument in a classroom re: whether having fun while trying to do good was justified. Once she saw the depths to which they were similar people, she realized she understood her and wanted to help her.
Lesson: Yang loves people who are similar to her - especially in terms of their pain rather than what she finds fun. This is why I ship her with Neon as well, incidentally - Neon is to Yang in V3 what Yang is to Blake in V2.
- Yang’s biggest hangup is shame.
Yang is ashamed of a lot of things. She was ashamed that her mother didn’t want her. She was ashamed that she could never do anything to help Ruby as she suffered over the death of Summer. She was ashamed at failing to protect Blake, and ashamed of how deeply it broke her to lose her and her arm. And while she’s starting to overcome her fixation on pain, she hasn’t generally dealt with this underlying method of hurting herself (except where Blake is concerned).
She’s also too stubborn to admit this shame, which drives her away from the people closest to her.
Lesson: Yang responds to failure with shame, even when she never had a chance to succeed.
That’s all that’s coming to mind right now! my brain is a little fried.
