“97%” is a film that is more than appropriate considering Valentine’s Day just passed the week before. This film follows a jaded office worker as he discovers, through an online dating app, that his perfect match is within his general area, encouraging him to look everywhere to find her. The film is fairly basic and straightforward, but I couldn’t help but admire the film’s subtle commentary on the changing face of dating rituals. With the popularity of phone apps like Grindr, Tinder, and the like promising easier access to finding potential partners, one can’t help but wonder if the basic face-to-face approach to dating is slowly fading away. There’s a scene in the film where the protagonist admires the reflection of a woman on the subway while that same woman watches him, longing for direct interaction. The scene perfectly sums up the modern perception towards love; the love most people chase after is an idealized illusion and that the real love that people need requires a change of perspective. A powerful message from a fairly lighthearted film, perhaps a message that’s more necessary than we might think. Enjoy.
