Secret Machines - Ten Silver Drops @thesecretmachines @runoutgroovelps #thesecretmachines #brandoncurtis #secretmachines #joshgarza #bencurtis #psychrock #spacerock Unless you’re new to VINYLEXAMS, you already know how much I love anything related to psych or space rock. Granted, both genres are somewhat loosely defined and can span from Jefferson Airplane to Tame Impala when we’re talking about “psych” (whew, have fun with that in the comments, etc.), but the part that I love about so many bands in both camps is how artistic they are when creating unique soundscapes. Secret Machines are a band from Dallas that got their start releasing spacey art rock back in 2004 and in their heyday shared the stage with monster acts like @foofighters @m83music @officialspzd @interpol and @kingsofleon. They seemed like an unlikely but welcome rock act to make it to the major leagues as quickly as they did and it all went down during kind of a weird time for popular music, all told. Ten Silver Drops was their second album and my personal favorite of their catalog. Alone, Jealous, and Stoned was a pretty perfect opening track for an album that somehow straddled the line between small and precious indie rock and made-for-stadiums alt rock a la early @coldplay in ways. Lightning Blue Eyes is the song that really pulled me in, though, and I probably have listened to that particular track a thousand times in my life so far. Ben Curtis left the band not long after this album to focus on @schoolofsevenbells and while he had some great years with them, he very unfortunately passed away from a type of lymphoma in 2013.
