What Were You Asking?: A Benedict Cumberbatch x Reader Drabble
You woke up slowly, relishing the warmth coming peeking through the curtains in your bed. You pressed your face back into your pillow, reaching out your hand to move in closer to Benedict. However, your hand only met cold sheets. You gripped the sheets, sitting up in the bed to look around and see if Benedict was in the room. When you discovered that he wasn’t, you frowned.
”Ben?” You called out, beginning to climb out of the bed. You ran a hand through your hair, rubbing the drowsiness out of your eyes with your right hand. You smiled when you heard Benedict’s footsteps coming down the hallway. You sat back down on the bed as he came into view. “There you are.” Benedict smiled at you, looking down a bit. After spending two years together, you could tell when he was nervous, and he was nervous right now. You raised an eyebrow, extending your left hand towards him. “Come h-“ The word died in your throat as you noticed a sparkle on your left hand. Your eyes widened a bit as you pulled your hand back towards you, inspecting the diamond ring. “Benedict.” His name came out in a breath, and you looked up at the man who was moving closer to you now.
He had a smile on his face as he kneeled beside you, “You only just noticed?” He chuckled as you nodded, eyes flickering over him briefly before looking back at the ring. “I’m sorry I couldn’t think of a better way to ask.. There wasn’t any way that was worthy enough for you, so I just..” Benedict took your hands in his own, thumb grazing over the ring.
”Oh Ben, it’s wonderful.” You smiled. “But, I’m sorry.. What were you asking?” You played coy, wiggling your eyebrows at your boyfriend. He rolled his eyes a bit, laughing and shaking his head. He shifted his position on the ground, bringing a leg up so he was now kneeling on the ground.
He pursed his lips, taking a deep breath, “I’ve done so many things, and yet this is the one thing I’m completely nervous about.. An audience of one, and I’m shaking with nerves.” Benedict laughed, adjusting his grip on your hands. “(Y/N)..” You squeezed his hands, nodding at him to continue, “(Y/N), you are absolutely wonderful. You understand everything, or almost everything, that happens in my life, and you still elect to be with me. You have put up with me for two years now, somehow. I don’t know how I haven’t managed to scare you off yet. But no less, you stay by my side, even when I’m gone for a very long time. God bless you for that, by the way. I…” Benedict nodded his head back and forth, licking his lips, “I had this planned out, but I seem to have forgotten it.” When you laughed at Ben, he nodded, continuing on, “Oh yes… (Y/N), your presence in my life for the past two years has been absolutely breathtaking and my privilege. And.. And I want you to give me the honor of having you there for the rest of my life. So, will you please, please give me the great joy of calling you my wife? Will you marry me?”
Benedict looked up at you expectantly. You allowed your smile to die down a bit, shaking your head slightly, “No.” You watched as Ben’s face fell, and he began to stutter, making an apology. He started to stand up, pulling his hands from yours. You held onto them tighter, pulling him back down to you, and you let out a quiet laugh, shaking your head quickly. “I didn’t mean that. I just wanted to see what it was like. Guess you’re not the only good actor in the household.” Benedict opened his mouth a bit in shock before letting out a laugh.
”You are an arse, (Y/N).” Benedict grinned at you as a shocked expression fell over your face. You reached up, grabbing your pillow, and then whacking Benedict in the head with it. He grabbed the pillow out of your hands as he stood up, shaking his head at you. Benedict had a smirk on his face, “So is that a yes then? You never actually answered me.”
”I don’t know. Are you sure you want to marry an arse?” You stuck your tongue out at him.
”Mm… I’m sure we can work past that.” He smiled down at you, bending a bit to give you a kiss. “Is that a yes then? Can we stop trying to give me a heart attack?”
”Oh, I don’t know.. I kinda like this, the suspense..”
”(Y/N), come on now.” Benedict whined quietly.
”Yes, of course I’ll marry you, idiot.” You smiled, rolling your eyes at your fiancé. “Now, kiss me before you call your mother.” You giggled, knowing exactly what Benedict would do once you let him roam away.
Benedict chuckled before pressing a kiss to your lips. He pulled away, fishing his phone out of his pocket. “You know me too well, love.” He sat down next to you, putting his phone on speaker as the mobile rang. The reality of the situation began to dawn on him, you realized, as Benedict lowered his mobile a bit. He looked up at you, a smile spreading across his face. “We’re getting married.” He whispered, pressing his forehead to yours. You nodded, laughing a bit.
”Benedict? Hello, what is it?” Wanda’s voice drifted through the small speaker. Benedict opened his mouth to speak, but no words made it through his mouth. He looked at you helplessly, holding the mobile out towards you.
”I said yes, Wanda.” You grinned, stroking Ben’s cheek with your hand. He turned his head slightly to kiss your palm, joining in laughter as Wanda let out a yell in celebration. She called for Timothy and listened as she shared the news with him. Your laughter died a bit as your own realization came over your face.
Benedict gave you a quizzical look, tilting his head a bit, “What is it?”
”(Y/N) Cumberbatch.” You murmured, shaking your head a bit. “What a name.” A new fit of laughter fell over the pair of you.
Benedict pressed a kiss to your forehead, “Oh, you’ll love it.”
”I most certainly will.”
