When I was a wee lad, my grandfather had a sign hanging in his kitchen with the following benediction (which I assume is also a toast):
“Those who drink go to sleep. Those who sleep do not sin. Those who do not sin go to heaven. So let’s all drink and go to heaven!”
It’s stayed in my head ever since I learned to read. It conveniently skips over sinning that happens between drink and sin, but I like to think that it implies that sleep absolves most sins from the night before.
So, on this stormy night, let’s all have a drink and go to heaven!

But I’m sure I can quit the Lord any time I want.”
