September 1st, 1975 is the fifth year in a row that James and Y/N Potter will be attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The twins have been causing trouble with their select group of friends since they first set foot in the Great Hall and sat through more detentions than any other students before them. Ever since they became animagi to keep their werewolf friend Remus company during his transitions, the possibilities for trouble making have been near endless. While Y/N was seldom the evil genius behind the group's pranks, she definitely never put a lot of effort into preventing them from happening. This changed when she became friends with Lily Evans, who made her focus more on school and less on pulling silly pranks with her brother and his friends.
Especially when it came to Lily's friend Severus Snape, Y/N had become a lot less excited about being a part of the mischievous practical jokes they'd pull on poor Snivellious. She started to put a lot more effort into her academic work, which resulted in her outperforming her brother more and more often, much to his dismay. Both of them were naturally gifted and succeeded at everything they set their minds to, but the extra practice Y/N was putting in was really starting to make a difference. Y/N was the first of her class to produce an animagus, a cute silver cat made its way out of the tip of her wand and made its way over to James, as if trying to mock him. While it only took him seven more minutes to produce an impressive silver stag, James left the classroom feeling somewhat upstaged by his baby sister of two minutes. Remus was trying to cheer him up on their way to transfiguration, but had very little success. It was only when James saw Lily across the hall that his eyes finally lit up again and his mood improved significantly. He made his way over to her in an attempt to ask her out for what must have been the third time in their first week back at school. To no one’s surprise, she declined. Just when he turned around to leave, Y/N made her way over to the two of them. ‘’He bothering you again?’’ she asked and Lily simply nodded. ‘’I told you to drop it James, she's not into you.’’ ‘'Lovely to see you, too, my dearest sister.’’James said to Y/N and gave Lily one more of his charming smiles before turning around and joining his friends at the end of the hall. ‘’JUST THINK ABOUT IT!’’ he shouted as they started walking to their next class. Lily and Y/N rolled their eyes at him before making their way to the dungeons for their next class. Later that day they were getting some of their homework done in the common room, when James and Sirius approached them in the cozy little corner they had decided to settle down in for the rest of the day. ‘'What are you guys doing on this very lovely afternoon?’’ ‘'Seriously James? Again? Do you really not have anything else to do? Torture Snivellious maybe?’’ Lily shot her a glaring look, but before Y/N could respond, Sirius interrupted. ‘’You know, if you just said yes and went out with him once he'd leave you alone.’’ James nodded excitingly at the proposal of this deal, but Lily declined once again. ‘’I'm good, really. And I think that's considered blackmail thank you very much.’’ It was now the boy's turn to roll their eyes, but James wasn't' quite ready to give up yet. ‘’How about I do your homework for a week? Two? A month?’’ Lily chuckled. ‘'You barely even do your own homework, I think I'll pass on that one. James looked at Sirius for help, but he just looked at him and shrugged his shoulders. ‘’I’ll think of something else then, I guess.’’ he said and the two of them made their way up to their bedroom. ‘’I'm sorry about him Lily, I’ve told him several times to stop bothering you.’’ ‘’I know, it's okay though. I’m a little offended that you didn't tell me about you and Sirius though.’’ she said with a questioning look on her face. ‘’I kinda thought we tell each other everything?’’ ‘'What about me and Sirius? There's nothing to tell.’’ Lily furrowed her eyebrows ‘’Then why was he staring daggers at you the entire time they were here? Didn't he move in with you guys over the break? I’m not judging you, I would’ve just liked to know, you know?’’ Y/N was getting more confused by the second. ‘’Lily, I really don't know what you’re talking about. Yeah, he moved in with us, but it was during the last two weeks of summer break and I barely even spoke to him. He seemed pretty upset and they spent most of their time hauled up in James’ room doing god knows what. Besides, I doubt he'd ever wanna do anything with me, he can have any girl he wants.’’ ‘'But if he wanted you, you wouldn't say no?’’ Lily was still sceptical. ‘’To be honest I’ve never really thought about that, but if anything ever did happen, I swear you'd be the first to know. Now can we finish the assignment for potions, please? I'd rather not spend all night on this essay.’’ Lily gave Y/N one last calculating look before deciding that her best friend was likely telling the truth and picking up her feather. ‘’Alright then, you're off the hook for now, Potter. But I’m on to you.’’ Y/N rolled her eyes at Lily's joking remark and the two of them went back to their homework. That night Y/N was lying in bed, unable to fall asleep. She couldn't stop thinking about what Lily had said about Sirius. She'd always liked him and they'd pulled off various hilarious pranks on her brother together, but she never got the impression that there was ever anything more than a genuine friendship between the two. Did he really stare at her? And what would she say if her ever asked her out?
