BERANEK - “MAN WITHOUT SOUL”
I’ve been doing mostly fine in quarantine, as a generally fairly adaptable person, but one thing I’ve been missing is crate digging for records. I’ve taken to scrolling through large stores on Discogs, though, and ordering online, which admittedly has its perks. What it lacks in huffing old paper smell, it generally makes up for with the ability to casually open a new tab and start listening to whatever strange relics one comes across.
While perusing a delightful store from Sweden, I encountered this album: Daylight in the Dark, by one “Beranek.” Intrigued by the striking cover photo and the Slavic-sounding name, I did some further digging and learned that his full name is Espen Beranek Holm, and he’s from Norway. So much for the Slavic theory. While evidently not his best known work in Europe, Daylight in the Dark seems to me like a real hidden gem. Rock-oriented arrangements with lashings of very of-the-moment synthesiser give it a texture very similar to the kind of mainstream 1980s pop that many artists today seem desperate to imitate, and the fairly competent English-language lyrics mark it as clearly intended for an international audience. It’s very accessible and will no doubt prove a treat for those who still long for more from the era of post-Bowie synth-pop. I think the dramatic “Man Without Soul” is my favourite track, but the opener, “Dancing in the Wind,” is also a standout.

The video is rather strange, but the soundscape of this song is so perfect it just feels like a warm knife gliding through butter. Does that sound strange? Well, listen to the song and judge for yourself.
Do your ears a favour. Put your headphones on and listen to this.
Beranek's voice in this is one of the sexiest things I've ever heard.

Bonus Beranek!
This is one of my favourites of his songs, there's something rather sexy about it.
