This subpoena ordered representatives of the State of West Virginia to appear before the Supreme Court in a post-Civil War dispute between Virginia and WV, 12/3/1866. VA sought to reclaim Berkeley and Jefferson Counties from WV, but the Supreme Court rejected VA’s claims in 1871.

Disturbing audio recording made inside an elementary school classroom in West Virginia

A hidden recording device in a special education classroom is raising alarming questions about what went on inside a classroom at an elementary school in Berkeley County, West Virginia.

This is deplorable. To treat some of our most vulnerable members of our society like this is disgusting. Receiving paid leave is ridiculous. They should be fired. I hope these teachers never work another day in their lives with children. EVER!!!

Rice Cultivation Workers

On the Mulberry Plantation, men dig the canals that run among rice fields, 1916, Berkeley County, South Carolina.  The Mulberry Plantation cultivated rice from the colonial period through 1918.  During the American Colonial Era, the rice profits produced by forced labor made South Carolina the wealthiest colony.  This collection documents a variety of tasks involved in the labor-intensive process enslaved people performed in the Lowcountry for over two hundred years in North America, a process freed men and women continued to work at after the American Civil War.
