Review: BERLYN's newest indie-pop single 'Late Night Call' teeters between light and heavy
Sydney based singer-songwriter BERLYN was raised on the Newcastle music scene with artists like Middle Kids and Shannon James setting the stage for her inspiration. Following a year filled to the brim with warm support, BERLYN is booked to support Ali Barter on her regional tour as well as collaborating with Rob Coote and writing with Oscar Dawson.
Now, she shares her latest single 'Late Night Call' to remind everyone why she's a talent worth giving a chance to. This indie-pop single is anthemic at heart and sure to strike you on first listen with the unique tones of both the guitar and vocals. Slow and steady drum beats keep a memorable rhythm throughout, nicely leaving the guitar and vocals to take front and centre of the performance whilst adding a nice catchy edge to the overall instrumentals. It was evident, at least for us, that BERLYN has a hauntingly individual vocal sound with an inherent richness that's showcased through the wide extent of her vocal range. Higher, drawn out chorus notes were met with elegancy, adding yet another layer of depth to this eclectic soundscape. Pieced together with lyrical content that leads the release, the emotional resonance of every painful line shines through with each word sung, guaranteeing that 'Late Night Call' is not a song you'll be forgetting anytime soon.
Although she toys along the lighter side of lyrical content, pairing her words with typical head-bopping indie-pop instrumentals take the weight off her words. Yet 'Late Night Call' is much deeper than it appears on the surface, as BERLYN candidly expresses the difficulties of falling for someone but wanting to keep those feelings secretive. Keeping this hard-to-get person at arm's length for the underlying fears of rejection makes for a thoroughly enjoyable, and universally relatable subject matter sure to get under the skin of many with heart-eyes from afar. Phrased and worded just as much at arm's reach as the experience itself, the track is not as heavy as it could have been, intentionally kept more surface level for listeners to digest the heart-wrenching narrative with more witty relatability than turmoil.
