                  clever, missouri, is an empty beer can kicked down the freeway and crushed under the wheel of a ‘90s pick-up that’s seen better days. rundown mcmansions that look like they ain’t gon’ weather no storm, propped up by thin plasterboard and cheap wholesale shit, kids hopping through netted fencing with scraped knees and hurling empty NOS canisters at oncoming traffic like some fucked up country knock and run -- welcome to clever, missouri.

even the sign is rusting. old. there are pockets in america where no one seems to know where the money goes -- staunch republicans, stubborn churchgoers, stuffy diners with no AC where you ask for a plate of eggs and everything’s churned out overcooked and old. clever seems to be the lint in one of those pockets. an opportunity’s an opportunity, but every time she drives past that where it just gets better everyday! sign, she chokes back a wince and presses her foot down a little harder. this fucking place.

                “i’m surprised you guys don’t have your own olympics.”    it’s sarcasm, sure, but there’s also a righteous air in this fucking place that makes bernie wonder how short the town council meeting would be to set that up. but clever, missouri, is a tiny, everyone-knows-everyone pillar of the midwest, if that pillar had been cut at its knees and forgotten about on most major maps. 

       “--- that’s not an excuse, by the way. for some of the shit that goes on here. i get it -- the small town mentality. but i’m not being cowed by some wife-beaters in buttfuck missouri.”
