Addendum to the Random Chroma Bands post from yesterday… I have an order of magnitude more Type B, Type C/p and Type D RCBs than any of the others, so sometimes I like to smush them together into an average image. This actually serves an interesting purpose — it shows about how average these processes are. The 258 Type B bands are actually pretty random, the average is blending down to a reddish tone with subtle modulations. That’s very interesting to me, as one would expect at least some correlation in this process. The 126 Type D bands are less random, some of the lines are trending toward a specific color, so that color is preferred in that band for some reason. With 126 images a truly random set would be getting pretty beige. However, I think I know where the correlation is coming from, this particular process has an unexpected flaw. Finally, the 331 Type C/p images also display some mild tendencies toward a specific color. Not too weird, maybe a little puzzling given the large data set. Again, that many samples should be trending pretty beige. However, I’ve been noticing a definite trend in that particular source lately, so I also averaged the latest 32 images. That particular group has a strong correlation between specific bands and specific colors. This is very interesting and maybe a bit worrying. There are various places that pure random numbers can be obtained on the Interwebs, but these are nowhere near purely random. What source is being used? Why isn’t it better?
