EUREKA! - Cheeseburger Date #8

I think it should be mandatory for all Californians to road trip the CA coast once every two years.  I FINALLY after 36 years, got to check out Big Sur.  Could it really be all that everyone always says?  Um yeah.  Wow! 

I was all over Cali this weekend- Santa Clara for California Extreme, a classic arcade game convention.  I pb'd (personal best) in Ms.Pacman- 107,000 & got in the top 5 on BurgerTime!  Felt pretty good. Then went to Great America to get turned upside down on some rad roller coasters! Then down the coast through Big Sur & finally arriving in San Luis Obisbo to visit my friend Brit Tarr at Bluebird Salon.  Which is a super unique Bumble & bumble salon!

She recommended Eureka!Burger as the best Cheeseburger in SLO. Who am I to argue with a local!

I knew from the second I walked up that I was gonna love it, because of their sign.

    When I walked in I could not believe the size of Eureka!Burger.  Massive, but very spread out.  If you like beer, they have a ton on tap in the coolest display behind the bar.  This restaurant is bi-level & I'm sure goes off at night.  Opened in November.

This upstairs nook would be a cool spot to hang with friends, for sure! I dig some well placed wallpaper!

I order my usual.  Beef, Bun, Bacon & American Cheese + Fries.   The service is very friendly and unpretentious.  I'm starving.  When IT arrives, and I do mean "IT".  OMG.  It looks delicious. 

Todd is with me & his is no joke either. Check out the madness-

I start with the fries & they could use some crisping.  I like mine near potato chip status & these were, well.. a bit limp.  Don't get me wrong though, when life gives you lemons... I mashed them with my fork and created my own side dish that I devoured.

The Cheeseburger, oh the Cheeseburger.  Here was what Todd had to hear while I inhaled it- "Mmmm.  This is soooo good."  x100. 

The beef had a kick to it. The seasoning was perfect.   Eureka!Burger Uses 100% Vegetarian Fed, Hormone & Antibiotic Free, All Natural Beef.  I can appreciate that! My bun was resilient.  With every bite I took it fluffed right back up.  Like a memory foam bun! The buns are made by a local bakery and are topped with Paprika.  Surprisingly good!

Don't sweat if you aren't anywhere near SLO, there are 5 locations in California.

I went to Batch & enjoyed the BEST ice cream sandwich of my life! See:

Holy Cow! Cheeseburger Date #6

Where: Slater's 50/50 which is 66 miles away

Why: A server at another restaurant told me it was her favorite!

What: The 50/50- The burger patty is half ground beef/half ground bacon.

I pull into the parking lot and it looks much more subdued that I expected.  Looks like a nice Mexican restaurant.  I shrug when I see valet parking until I realize there are no other options and it’s complimentary! Cool. Next I walk up & see a WIFI sign.  YES!!  I think everywhere should have WIFI so we can check in and promote their business. Brilliant.  So far so fantastic! Restroom is clean and has a cool art on the door & inside=

After a moderate wait in plentiful seating, I am sat.  The restaurant is airy. Lots of windows and natural light.  I see a couple MONSTER size burgers pass my table and I am super excited.  Could this be as grand as I was told?  Possibly.

I “design my own burger” using a checklist.  My fav part- I got to name it!  “Hot Date” I add fries, but shouldn't have.  (They offer some odd burgers too=

Once my strawberry lemonade it brought out, so is a pile of napkins.  This is another sign that things are gonna go well.  I hope. 

My Cheeseburger arrives for our date with the signature psycho toothpick, a knife, stabbed into it to keep it all together! It looks ridiculously perfect.  It is HUGE.  Ginormous! Massive. There is no possible way the french fry pile could be higher, so I give it a pass anyway.  When you go, and you will, don’t order anything but the burger.  Trust me.  Its more than enough.  I did opt for the 2/3 pound patty because I could, but they do offer 1/3 & 1 pound!  Holy cow!  I realize I should have fasted for 3 days prior to this Slaters 50/50 experience.    Oh yeah! It's delicious. You can see the bacon chunks in the patty-

Could not have been better UNLESS it was on a pretzel bun.  Yeah yeah I'm still going on about Cheeseburger Date #1.  This however was right up there.  GO Burger should tear a few pages from the Slater's 50/50 handbook.   Best part- My Cheeseburger only cost $10.95.  Great value for what it was!

All in all I highly recommend you fly, drive or swim from wherever, if you are a Cheeseburger aficionado like I am...

Who-Blue Dog Beer Tavern in Sherman Oaks, CA

I admit, I've eaten at Blue Dog Beer Tavern twice before, eh um, last month.  The first time was excellent, the second time was debatable.  I decided to go for a third and make it a date!

What- Huge hand smashed cheeseburgers on caramelized potato buns

Why- The dogs!!  You can e-mail them a pic of your dog & they'll frame it + add it to their wall decor.  We have a dog now and came out to support a dog lovers restaurant.

This is a serious burger establishment.  Oh and also a beer tavern which is lost on me since I don't like beer.  However I did observe many others partaking and enjoying themselves! Todd ordered Pear Cider.  Interesting, right?

We were sat quickly and our server had pink hair, so I felt right at home!  I ordered my usual- Cheeseburger plain with only bacon.  :) I couldn't wait. It had been a week since I had eaten a cheeseburger.  That may not seem like a long time to you, but prior to this blog I was averaging about 8 cheeseburgers a week.  Fine, I admit probably closer to 10 a week. I've never met one I didn't love!

About 15 minutes later IT arrived... Drumroll... (The 15 minutes felt like 2 days)

It was Be-au-ti-ful.  The only problem was, I could count the fries.  It makes me nervous if I can count them.  What if there isn't enough?  I always think the pile of fries should be higher than the burger.  This pile was not.  Fear aside I dug in and annihilated this masterpiece as I'm sure Todd tried to politely hide his disgust.  It tasted terrific.  Not as juicy as Hole in the Wall Burger, but still above average.  I ran out of fries before I finished my burger. :(  #FryFail

My next Cheeseburger Date will take place in San Fransisco!  I'm gonna HUNT down the BEST cheeseburger in the Bay Area and eat it whole!  Okay, maybe not the last part, but I WILL eat it!

Is the Corner Bistro burger REALLY the best!?

Its been a few weeks now but did you see Corner Bistro was named the 2011 Best cheeseburger in New York City by The New York Daily News.

Great news but is it really THE best cheeseburger in all of New York City or is it 6 degrees of separation?

    My case:

Tonight, I caught the HIMYM episode where Marshall cant for the life of him remember the location of the best burger joint in NYC that he'd ever eaten at.  Throughout the episode, he's tries place after place all while friends and complete strangers suggest someplace different, someplace 'great'.

Long story short, they are at the bar drinking when one guy overhears their conversation and says - 

"Hey man, it was called The Corner Bistro!"

 To which Marshall replies, "Thanks guy!  You only pointed out the highest-rated burger in the Zagat guide!  Let me return the favor: Want a great cup of coffee...It's at Starbucks."

So there you have it.  

Is Corner Bistro really the best burger or is it just the most famous?
