Beth is lit by the fireplace, bathed in warm tones. Even in her puffy jacket, it turns her dulcet orange. It feels like an OMEN, if you could feel omens before you knew what went wrong.

  Well, she wasn’t expecting this. In Steph’s life (or what could laughably be called that), she isn’t used to familiar faces. At least, not without them in old photographs or pictures on the news. But here she is, awestruck and staring at Evan’s new friend. Beth.
