     “Yeah...you’re not wrong.” Thomas lets out a small sigh, gazing into the desert that stretches on and on and on ahead of them. He can see the mountains at the end, sure, but it almost feels like an optical illusion --- like no matter how much ground they cover, they never actually get any closer. What are they doing? What has he gotten them all into? (Doctor Cooper will help us, we just have to make it there, he tells himself, but man, making it there is turning out to be the hardest part.)

     It’s all so empty.

     “Something tells me lots of people already have.”

     “Yeah, same,” he says, a little lamely, but he’s looking at her with intrigue regardless --- he’s known of Rachel, and Aris, for a long time now, but he’s never MET them before. Up until now, they’d almost felt like ghosts, in a way, there in names on doors and casual mentions in conversation, but always out of reach. But here she is, in the flesh, real as can be, and he’s curious --- not least because she’s the only girl his age he’s ever talked to besides Teresa. (He might be a little anxious. No big deal.) “I think you and Aris have been here as long as me and Teresa, I can’t believe we haven’t met before.” A nervous little laugh. “Crazy, huh?”
