Just finished Nada’s dream-illusion! A short extract …

‘Patients?’, the teaspoon chunked gently against her glass. She didn’t look at him.

‘Darling. I mentioned this last week. New patients were due in. And it’s my job to get them back on track. To give them sweeter dreams’, he replied lightly, still sipping his coffee, flicking through the newspaper. She continued to stir, adding sugar, her mind in free fall. Sweeter dreams? Darling? Since when did he talk with such… casualness? Bringing the mug to her hands, she cradled it, blowing the steam. Her eyes watched carefully.

‘And indulge me. What is it, that you do with your patients?’

He flicked the newspaper with a hint or irritation and sighed, not looking up.

‘Well, I’m not sure darling. I’m a Sleep Therapist. So what do you think?’

His tone was light enough, but there was a bubbling underneath, a patience that ran thin. She sipped her coffee and almost choked. Where she excepted sweetness, a sharp bitter taste lingered. Coughing slightly, she placed the mug back on the counter.

‘And these patients of yours,’ she cleared her throat, ‘what do you give them? To help them sleep?’ His answer came quicker and sharper than she expected, as though it had been rehearsed before.

‘Oblivion.’

I really wanted to nod towards Gary Oldmans Dracula, with the Oceans of Time, to emphasise the parallels between the characters. Mephistopheles doesn’t love Nada. He loves the memory of what she embodies and represents. Unable to let go, forever chasing a dream that will always be a dream. We can all go forward, but no one, not even Time himself, can go back 🕰️
