Based on the form of Vodou flags (drapo Vodou), Betye Saar's "Snake in the Heart" (1987, from the 1988 'House of Fortune' installation of found objects and recycled materials, drawings, and sequin works) is reproduced from 'Betye Saar: Serious Moonlight,' published by @delmonico_books & @icamiami Haitian-American novelist Edwidge Danticat writes: "When previous occupants of a place, particularly dead occupants, refuse to move on, we call that place haunted, and we call those entities ghosts. Objects, too, can become ghosts and they are not always unwelcome. Sometimes we actually need them to congregate and mingle in order to help us reframe the past before moving on. The longing for tangible markers, symbols, and sites is a powerful yearning in people whose basic humanity has always been and continues to be questioned. Saar offers us some of those markers in her collages, installations, and sculptures. It is a gift and a blessing that can never be underestimated."
