Hi! I saw you were accepted into the NYU Hesa program on the hesa tag! Congrats! I am a rising senior in undergrad and I will begin applying to programs in the fall. Was there anything in particular that drew you toward NYU. Any advice is welcome!

Hello! Thank you for the congratulations!

Let’s see…why did I apply to NYU’s program?

1) Required internship/assistantship. This is a major factor for me. I believe in the power of experiential learning, and I feel like I learn better when I’m able to apply what I’m doing in class to what I’m doing outside of it. The fact that you can’t get into the program without an internship really aligns well with my learning style and preferences.

2) Capstone Project. When you’re researching programs, take a look at what said program requires of you to complete it, and what options you have for professional development. The point of going for a professional degree is so that you’re qualified to go to work after you’re done. NYU’s capstone ensures your professional development while you’re learning.

3) Cohort. I wasn’t completely aware that NYU’s program had a cohort, but now that I know this, I’m even more thankful that I decided to go here. Cohorts mean you’ve got classmates who can give you support and advice, even if you’re not all taking the exact same classes or having the exact same schedules. All of us coming in for the Fall semester are required to take two particular classes, so maybe we’ll have different instructors, but if I’m stuck, I’ll be able to approach another cohort member and say “Help me understand x/y/z from this thing. How did your professor explain it, because i didn’t get it when mine talked about it!”

4) Location. NYU is in a huge city, with other universities and schools nearby. When I’m done with my program, I’ll automatically have a pool of schools to apply to for work, plus anywhere else in the country I decide to look.

5) Brand name. There’s a reason this one isn’t listed higher, and really, it’s because brand name is one of the last things I think about in general. But NYU is very well recognized, both in the US and abroad, and sometimes that matters when you’re trying to get an interview for a job, even though you don’t want it to.
