I finally got around to unpacking the last of my books the other day after moving several months ago, and had a mini freak out when I couldn't find my copy of UMS before remembering that it's the only one I didn't kickstart so I just have it on kindle lol. But that made me wonder: is there a way at this point to get a signed copy of UMS? Totally understandable if not, but I figured I'd ask before just grabbing the paperback off of amazon.
Happy to sign (and decorate, if asked, I LOVE STICKERS) the inside page of my novels.
Trouble is that postage from Australia to everywhere is... remortgage-the-house-level expensive. UMS is more than a kilo, so:
$54 (plus a couple of dollars for a sachel), plus the printing costs of the book which are about $20, is a pretty steep price to pay for a signed book!
So, in theory, happy to sign books. In reality, it generally too expensive for people to ask for that!
I am assuming that when Min saw the genderbent version of a cartoon character it was Fionna and Finn from Adventure Time. Years later after Under my skin, would Min be into the series Fionna and Cake ?
Nice pickup - yes, the genderbent characters Min (for new players: a transmasc character from a number of my novels) saw that inspired the genderbent painting were Fionna and Prince Gumball from Adventure Time :)
I actually haven't seen the new series, but judging by the name it's literally an entire genderswap of the original series??? So I think Min would probably watch for at least nostalgia's sake XD
Hey! Hope you’re holding up okay, with COVID-19 and all. May I ask what inspired you to write Min as a character and her journey? I hope to be able to buy your books soon!
So the creation of Min was fairly haphazard: I needed two characters for The Dreaming who would fit well within the story and mirrored in some ways Lara Croft and Sam Nishimura's relationship, whilst also sort of holding a mirror to it. Bree was easy to create, but for Min I wanted someone who was queer and somewhat undefinable compared to very clear-cut stereotypes, so I settled on someone who was both non-binary and non-white. I made Min Korean because there's a very sizeable Korean community in Sydney who I never hear about in any media or literature ever, and I was like WHY IS THAT - also because I have queer Korean-Australian friends who were super happy to help me represent what being Korean, queer, and second generation Australian was like.
Min and Bree ended up being extremely popular characters, popular enough to sell books on their own, so lifted them out of the fandom-verse and put them into original fiction.
Min's struggles with gender were informed by my own questioning over several decades, and what I observed in my friends.
wanna feel old? Bree from UMS was born in March 1995 so is 28, approaching 29 years old now.
I found myself thinking about Min playing Baldur's Gate with Bree. Which character(s) do you think they'd play?
OH THIS IS A GOOD ONE.
Look, Min DOES prefer FPS but it's not out of the realm of possibility she'd actually play BG3, especially if it had very good reviews (which it obviously does).
Min isn't super fond of bodies and physicality so I think she'd play a character that looks very far from how she looks. I can see drow or tieflings appealing to her. Male, and irritated by the lack of a 'nothing'/'it doesn't fucking matter' genitals option. Probably fighter. I can see her planning not to romance anyone but ending up with Shadowheart. I think her and Karlach would be bros. LOL. She would meticulously make sure everyone got the best possible endings and get some personal catharsis out of that XD
Bree, god. Bree would spend fucking HOURS in the character creator and make the cutest fucking tiefling bard you've ever seen in your life. Then she'd play the game for two hours and get bored with it LMAO
as a deeply anxious queer transmasc asian person with a relatively overbearing mother i wanted to say thank you for writing min!!! i feel incredibly called out but in a very good way and somehow his troubles make me feel much better about my own LMAO
Haha, you're welcome, my dude! I'm glad all the crap I put him through is relatable and gives you some relief!
I spent a couple of hours yesterday discussing my next book with my editor and implementing changes she wants to the next chapter, so he's fresh in my mind rn
actually, for Flesh & Blood I plotted out the entire romance between Min’s mum and Min’s dad, and there’s a HELL of a lot of backstory about why Min was born in Australia that I had intended to include in FAB (because it hugely humanised Min’s mum and explained a lot of her behaviour further), but in the end the story was already quite busy and I couldn’t fit it in. There’s little chance of it going into Bone to Pick either, because it’s information Min’s mother knows that Min doesn’t know, and Min isn’t speaking to Mum anymore.
