Raphi is more outspoken, so I feel like if anyone was going to, she would. But they don’t fight often. I can’t imagine them fighting about anything serious.

I push past our front door as fast as I can to find Dad. He’s in his study, I think he might be busy, but it’s been a whole day and I need to tell him about how terrible maths is, so I tap him on the shoulder. He jumps a bit, but he soon swings me onto his lap, swivelling our chair around to see Mom in the doorway. She smiles brightly, resting her shoulder on the frame.

“Dad, they made me do maths again,” I frown, pouting up at Mom more than him. He laughs, kissing me on the forehead. I’ve seen him kiss Momma like this before.

“Brinley, maths is important,” he reminds me.

“So are calculators,” Mom grins, and Dad shakes his head, smiling too.

“So is dinner,” I chime, and the two of them roll their eyes.

“It is!” I protest, crossing my arms over my chest, “what are we having?”

Mom shrugs, Dad purses his lips, and I call the pizza place. It’s Friday, after all. I can’t believe I forgot, how silly of me. “Can we watch The Princess and The Frog? Can we, can we, please?” I plead, folding my fingers together in prayer.

“We watched that last Friday,” Momma sighs.

“And the Friday before that,” adds Dad.

“And the Friday before that!” I remind them. We’re all silent. We know I’ll win. There’s no arguing with me. “Fine,” they say at the same time. I win again.

Raphi will if she’s in a hurry, but both of them are pretty tidy. 

forgets to run the dish washer

They usually just wash dishes in the sink, their dishwasher is always broken. He’ll wash, she’ll dry, and sometimes they’ll dance.

pumps gas for the car

Si does, because he’s usually on the drivers side.

drives when they’re going somewhere

Simon drives. Always.

rearranges the furniture

Raphi gets annoyed when things are in the same place for too long, so she’ll attempt to move the couches but needs Si’s help because couches are heavy.

falls asleep with the TV on

They always fall asleep during movies, and end up waking up tangled up together on the couch.

gets to use the bathroom first

Raphi, her hair takes longer to do.

decides the temperature for the ac/heater

It depends on who gets to it first, honestly. They race, in socks, and one of them always slips, but they never learn. Oh, and sometimes Raphi secretly turns it down at night so she can curl up next to him “for warmth”

sets up holiday decorations

Raphi decorates the mantle, Simon hangs the lights outside, and they both decorate the tree, sometimes Ella comes and helps, too. And Si gets to put the star on top because he’s the tallest.

leaves the lights on

Raphi is still afraid of the dark after her childhood experiences, so she’ll leave every light on in the house, especially if she’s alone. The bathroom light is always on at night, just in case, and there’s a lamp on each beside table that hesitantly get turned off only just before bed.

uses the bathroom with the door open

Neither.

fixes the plumbing (or calls the plumber)

If it’s something small, like a clogged toilet, they’ll argue take turns over who has to use the plunger. If it’s something big, Raphi calls the plumber after attempting, and failing, to fix it herself.

And Simon always kills the spiders.
