The Emperor’s Compliments (Dream Act3)
Spoilers: Baldur's Gate 3
I'll never stop praising the writing quality of Baldur's Gate 3, especially when it comes to the Emperor. One detail that really caught me off guard is the way the final dream handles its compliments, or rather, the framing behind them once you start digging.
Contextually, we are in the final dream of Act 3, the night after visiting the Knights of the Shield headquarters. Tav enters the Astral Prism and finds the Emperor beside them, unarmored.
First Surprise: What the compliment is actually about
I initially assumed the Emperor’s compliments were responsive to Tav's past decisions, since it comments earlier on events such as the fate of the druid grove or Nightsong. But this is not the case here, the dialogue is gated by whether Tav partially evolved.
"PARTIAL_CEREMORPH | The Emperor:
What I didn't anticipate was how reasonable you would be. You don't like to be coddled, cajoled. But you responded well to logic, to rational arguments, to cold, hard facts. You saw straight to the core of what really mattered".
A distinction that matters - at least for me. The Emperor’s praise reads less like appreciation of Tav as a person and more like validation that Tav has becoming a reliable means to its ends.
Second Surprise: Did It Ever Need to "Coddle"?
Once it is clear that the compliment is tied to Tav's transformation, "you don’t like to be coddled" stops sounding like insight into Tav's personality and starts sounding like retrospective justification: on this path, emotional persuasion simply wasn't needed.
Let's check if true. It's easy to test, because the Stelmane-mourn dream is the only scene between receiving the Astral-Touched Tadpole and this final one.
In that scene, the two main dialogue branches depend on Tav's tone (compassionate or aloof), but the outcome does intersect with transformation status:
_ If the ATT has been destroyed or if any companion is already partially evolved, the Emperor answers only with a cinematic silent "sage, knowing nod."
_ If no one is partially evolved and the ATT remains usable, the Emperor delivers a longer speech emphasizing closeness and urging reconsideration of transformation.
"The Emperor: You have shown me great empathy. We are closer now, close enough - I hope - that I can ask you to reconsider your position regarding your physical form. I know it is no easy choice for you, but we will have a far better time ridding the city of Gortash if you accept just a touch of illithidness. Not to mention the elder brain itself. Our chances against it greatly improve the more illithid we both are".
This attempt to connect with Tav is tricky because, in most cases, the Emperor addresses them as though it wants Tav specifically to transform, when in fact it only wants at least one person.

It also seems tricky for Larian, as they still have not debugged Empy's threat in the final dream, where it references "PARTIAL_CEREMORPH = false," even though it should follow the same logic and first check whether the ATT is still usable.

Pattern: Warmer when Tav resists, Colder when Tav is aligned
So… If no one has used the ATT and it remains usable, the Emperor intensifies its rhetoric of closeness. If that outcome has already been achieved, or if the ATT has been destroyed, the tone becomes noticeably cooler and more economical… to say the least.
A feeling reinforced by the exclusive partial-ceremorph player dialogue options offered in the last dream. One would expect an emotional escalation as a reward for alignment, yet the Emperor' replies remain strikingly flat (first Pic):
"Player: I could have done with a little more coddling.
The Emperor: I didn't get that impression. And my calculations are never wrong.
Player: I enjoyed our conversations.
The Emperor: As did I.
Player: I saw right through you.
The Emperor: Yes, you did."
There's a clear push-and-pull in how this is written. The Emperor doesn't actually open up here, even when Tav is aligned. Any shift in the dynamic comes from Tav's side, which tracks with a character not built around a companion-style intimacy arc.
Maybe that's simply how the scene is structured, but the consistency of the Emperor's behaviour is hard to ignore - especially when the pier endings reinforce the same pattern.
It is also interesting that "I saw right through you" does not trigger the same outcome as "I just wanted you to know that I know your true nature," which instead leads to the Stelmane 'Truth.'
It is as though the writers expect Tav to consume the tadpoles only if they genuinely trust the Emperor, or assume that recognizing its true nature automatically entails rejection. And this is a bit sad IMO.
