He  doesn’t  trust  his  voice  to  reply  her,  as  his  eyes  fall  on  Ben,  who’s  looking  at  them  from  the  end  of  the  bed.  He  nods,  his  eyes  going  back  to  hers.  He  trust  them,  he  wants  to  be  there  for  them,  and  if  he’s  completely  honest  with  himself,  he  wants  them  as  well:  good  &  kind  Ben,  fierce  &  brave  Beverly.

She  kisses  him  and  it’s  just  like  he  remembers,  her  lips  are  soft  and  she’s  a  little  hesitant  to  start,  but  there’s  intent  in  the  way  her  hand  caresses  his  cheek,  and  he  inadvertently  brings  one  of  his  hands  around  her  waist,  bringing  her  closer.  When  he  finally  breaks  the  kiss,  he  turns  to  Ben,  echoing  Bev’s  words   ❝ I-Is this okay? ❞   he  asks,  free  hand  extended  towards  the  architect,  wanting  to  touch,  but  not  daring,  not  yet.

     “Oh--oh crap. I think I might be sick.”

     Stomach churns and knees buckle as she drops, shutting her eyes tightly as she takes deep, open-mouthed breaths. Something about their recent little exercise hit her harder than the last few times she and Ben tagged up to experiment with her abilities. As appreciative as she is of him spending his time helping her figure this shit out, sometimes it backfires. Lux likens it to playing Russian roulette on occasion--sometimes, when she pulls the trigger, she gets nothing. Other times, it’s a big bang that catches her off-guard.

     Another deep breath and she rights herself, able to ground enough to sit back and close her eyes to re-focus herself. “I think--I think I’m okay. I feel like I opened myself too wide that time? I felt something pushing back against me and it was like when you get shoved in a crowd unexpectedly. Felt like I was bouncing off a wall.” Shaking her head, she finally opens her eyes and smiles at Ben with a weary expression. “I think I can try it again though. I was really on to something there, I swear.”

         “ i  hope  you  like  hot  chocolate .  because  i  kind  of  fucked  up  and  found  it  on  sale  and  bought  like  four  ten  packs  of  each  flavor  and  way  too  many  bags  of  those  tiny  marshmallows .  and  i  grabbed  real  hot  chocolate ?  the  kind  you  break  off  and  melt  down  in  hot  milk .  and  cinnamon  sticks .  and  whatever  christmas  candy  i  could  get  my  hands  on .  which  was  more  than  we  probably  needed .  but ...  i  haven’t  really  done  this  before ?  it’s  been  a  whole  fucking  decade  since  i  spent  christmas  with  anyone  other  than  myself  and  a  book  or  a  ghost  or  ten .  parents  started  going  on  a  cruise  for  christmas  once  i  moved  out ,  so ... ”  she’s  rambling  and  she  knows  it .  inviting  him  to  her  place  for  the  holidays  was  probably  not  the  best  idea  considering  she  had  never  done  anything  like  this .  but  she  wants  this  to  be  perfect .  and  she  hoped  spending  christmas  at  the  beach  qualified  as  close  to  perfect .

   her  head  dips ,  hair  falling  over  her  face  for  a  moment  before  she  tucks  it  back  behind  her  ears  with  a  nervous  laugh .  “ my  christmas  is  normally  raiding  blue  bicycle  books ,  the  wine  shop ,  the  grocery  store ,  and  finding  the  fuzziest  blanket  and  pajama  set  in  the  city  before  i  hunker  down  to  read  for  like  seventy  two  hours  straight . ”  a  pause  as  she  moves  to  take  a  seat  by  him  on  the  couch ,  foot  tapping  nervously  against  the  hardwood  floors .  “ last  year ,  though ,  i  was  in  north  carolina  investigating  this  house  in  germanton  where  the  lawson  family  was  murdered .  so ,  that  was  pretty  cool ...  but  not  really  a  great  christmas  story ...  is  it ? ”
