Want to start committing the Bible to memory, but not sure where to start?
I have a challenge/proposal for you.
To explain first: When I was a teenager, I participated in a program called Bible quizzing. It was a program that ran the majority of the school year, starting in September and ending in March, with the big regional event in May. Each year we (the quizzers) would memorize a book or books of the New Testament. Each month there would be a quiz meet, where the churches with competing teams/quizzers would meet up to face each other in a quiz. Each quiz contained twenty varying questions that covered the chapters the quizzers were supposed to have learned. The quizzers had to get the questions before the other team did, the team with the most points, of course, won.
There are a lot more details but in order to not drag this out, I’ve cut them out. However, if you are interested in learning more about it, I am more than happy to share all the details.
In short, Bible quizzing was a fun way to get teens into the Word. Even if they didn’t study the book, they were surrounded by peers who did, adults who would guide and teach, and were in a Christian community.
So I offer you to join me in learning with this year’s quizzers as they memorize Hebrews and 1&2 Peter.
The quizzers have decided this year to start earlier than normal in order to be a fearsome competitor when heading to Regionals, and so they’ve decided to start studying at the end of July. Right now there isn’t an official date of when they’re starting, but I will keep you all informed.
This is how I’m thinking it will work: Typically the quizzers pace themselves. A couple of chapters a month, give or take depending on the chapters and book(s). We would learn the amount of chapters they’ve set to learn. They’ll be starting Hebrews, then the letters of Peter. I can keep you posted about how well they’re doing to help motivate you to keep going.
Now I know that just memorizing Scripture can be a bit of a task. Especially if you’re looking at your schedule and there’s not enough time, or if even just memorizing can be a drag for you. If you just want to memorize along with the quizzers, that’s fine. But if you want to make it a bit more fun, I can try setting something up like quizzing, except online. So you would be quizzed over what you memorized.
If there is just one person interested in any of this, I will make a separate post with more details about how this will work. But right now this is a basic overview of an idea I have. However, it would be much appreciated if you sent a message, whether by reply, reblog with comment, private message, or ask to let me know if you’re interested. Not that I don’t like “likes,” but with something like this, it’s hard to interpret if a like means interest in participating, or a like means “I like this idea though I don’t really want to participate.”
Regardless, I will be memorizing these three books with the quizzers. But I am extending to offer for people to join me.
