“Yuka, have you ever gone on a date?”
Hikiko and Yuka sat before the TV, watching a family game show. The host asked a barrage of questions, one of which being.. “99% of Japan says they would not go on a second date, if their partner said what?”. Yuka was almost too pulled into the show to hear Hikiko’s question. “Yuka?”
“My planet has no use for that. We send out a mating call, fight for our partner, hunt, and start a family. It’s not like we have many places for something like that anyways, it’s too cold to spend that much time outside.” Yuka turned their head towards Hikiko, seeing Hikiko organize her polaroids. “Have you?”
Still looking through her polaroids, categorizing between photos of bugs and photos of her loved ones, she says “Well, no. I don’t really have anyone to go on a date with.” She laughs nervously, feeling embarrassed about the attention put on her. “I mean, I go out with my friends sometimes, but that’s different..”
“What about that Tomoyo girl? You want to be her “girlfriend”, don’t you?” Yuka says bluntly, not picking up on Hikiko’s embarrassment.
“HAHA WHAT’RE YOU TALKING ABOUTTT, I- I DON’T LIKE HER LIKE THAAAAT.” Hikiko tries to dissuade, despite her obvious lesbianism. “Hah.. heh.. Besides, even if I did, I. I don’t think she likes girls.” She looked down somberly, eyes glancing at a photo of Tomoyo. “At least, not in the same way I do.”
“You humans and your weird preferences, if you evolved to be hermaphrodites like us you wouldn’t be having this problem!” Yuka huffed and flopped onto their back. Then, a light bulb lit up in their head. Yuka changed her position to be on her stomach, with one leg in the air and a hand on their chin, trying to look as seductive as they could. “Hey, I’ve never been on a date, you’ve never been on a date, why don’t we go on a date together?”
Hikiko stared in shock. “W-why would we do that? I thought your species didn’t go on dates.” She could feel heat creep along her face, eyes dotting around the living room.
“Well, if we did I’d be learning more about human culture and how to better blend in. Plus, you could get more experience for Tomoyo.” Yuka kicked her feet back and fourth. “Or maybe.. Find a different mate?”
“Oh, like, killing two birds with one stone?” Hikiko asks.
“Uh. No? I mean, we can if you want. I was just thinking of something else.” Yuka paused and thought for a second. “Is that what you guys usually do? The TV didn’t mention anything like that.” Hikiko rolled her eyes and got up.
“Let’s get dressed before we go. We can take my bike up to ‘ane’s workplace, they make the best pancakes.” Hikiko walked towards the stairs as Yuka got up excitedly. “I put your clothes in a separate jore, by the way.”
Hikiko tried to be as quick as possible getting dressed. She put on a graphic tee, her dad’s jacket, and some basic jeans. Yuka, on the other hand, took much longer picking out what to wear. They went through many different outfits, trying to figure out what felt best. A sweater, maybe? No, it’s far too warm. Some cute shorts? No, they don’t like showing their legs. A weird button up with bug print all over it- hey, how did Hikiko’s clothes get in there? Finally they landed on a simple white dress, a vest, and a bucket hat for extra cuteness measures. Looking at themselves in a mirror, they leaned over and struck a pose, and smiled at her reflection.
“Yuka… Where did you get that hat?” Hikiko asked, knowing that she had not bought that for them. Yuka grinned and ignored the question, walking out of the room and down the stairs. Hikiko quickly followed.
“So we’ll be taking your bike, right?” Yuka asks, opening the front door as the two of them walk out.
“Yeah, I… literally just said we would.” Hikiko answered, confused.
“Are you sure there will be enough room for the both of us?” Yuka pointed at the bike laid out on the front lawn. “It doesn’t look big enough.”
“Oh, well,” Hikiko picked the bike up and steadied it. “It’ll be a tight squeeze, but we’ll make it work. You can hold onto me if you want.” She said, not even trying to be flirty, yet it made Yuka blush anyways.
And hold on she did. Yuka wrapped their legs around Hikiko and kept a hand on her shoulder as they biked down the dirt road. Yuka watched as houses, bus stops, trees, and even the sun itself passed them by. The more she thought about it, the more she realized just how nice the earth was. They were used to the hustle and bustle of uranus, always on the move, always looking for some place to hide from the never ending winter. They just didn’t have the time to build many buildings, much less one that they’d return to often. But here, where it’s much warmer, people gathered around in such constructions just because they felt like it. They hang out, go on dates, they don’t even have to hunt for most of their food! Yuka felt.. A bit jealous at this realization. But also a bit fearful. Can she ever get used to a life like this? When they go back to their planet, will they be able to get back into that routine?
“We’re here!” Hikiko announced, pulling Yuka out of her trance. Yuka looked at the building staring back at her, large glass giving an insight to the inside. Hikiko opens the door, a bell rings above as the two walked in. Hikiko looked around before her eyes landed on her big sister, Amae. “‘Ane!” She shouted and waved her hand.
Amae could feel a chill run down her spine. “Kh- Why are you here?!” Amae questioned, embarrassed at the fact that her family was at her job.
“Me and Hikiko are on a date!” Yuka let out bluntly. The other customers looked over at them from their tables, unsure how to feel. Hikiko blushed at all the eyes on them now and at just what Yuka said. Amae snickered at this and her mood softened, motioning the two to come over and sit down at a table.
Hikiko flipped through the menu, glancing over at Yuka as they did, well, nothing. “...Do you already know what you want to eat?” She asked, tapping on the table.
Yuka sighed “I can’t read, remember?” Yuka opened the menu and pointed at one of the pictures “Also I don’t know what these are or what they taste like.” They closed it with a loud clap.
“Oh… Right, I forgot that. Umm..” Hikiko pondered over what to do, when their eyes landed on a picture of their pancakes. That’s it! “I mentioned the pancakes from here before we left, the very good ones, remember? You can order those!” Hikiko leaned over the table “You’ve… you’ve never even had pancakes before! You’re gonna love them, I promise you.”
Yuka let out a quiet chuckle “Well of course I’ve never had them… But you’ve convinced me. I’ll try them!”
