POZ, 1BlueString Present: Big Footprints - The Big Comp II: 85 Bands, 5$ For Charity

Last year we partnered with Big Footprints for the first iteration of The Big Comp, and it is seriously a pleasure to be teaming up with the organization this year once again for The Big Comp II. 

Big Footprints is the marriage of musical and artistic communities around the world for the betterment of our environment. 60% of the profits will be going to 1BlueString, a campaign that asks guitarists to replace 1 of their 6 strings with a blue string to symbolize the 1 in 6 men who have survived childhood sexual abuse. The the remaining 40% will be going to The Nature Conservancy for a second year in a row.

We went big last year, but even bigger this year, we mean it. For a minimum of $5 you can download 85 fantastic tracks by 85 different bands with all donations (minus Bandcamp fees) going directly to the charities listed above until July 31st.

INTERVIEW: Marietta

     PHILADELPHIA, PA - Charity label, Big Footprints, run by Brendan Lukens of Modern Baseball, has been working with Philly band Marietta. Together the label helped the band release their debut full-length Summer Death, which was released in October of this year. In light of the release, and all the other exciting news revolving around the band and their music, I was able to talk to the bassist of the band, Ben, and ask him a couple of questions.

To start things off, could you guys introduce yourselves and tell us a little bit more about the band?

I’m Ben, I play bass in the band. Ethan and evan sing and play guitar. Andrew drums and has a great smile. We all come from central PA. Andrew and I went to high school together and were in a pop punk band back then. When we both moved to Philly, he started jammin’ with Temple friends, Evan and Ethan. Once I heard their hype-ass music I really wanted to join the band. After they released the demo, everyone was like “ya’ll suck without a bassist”, so I joined the band and made us super great sounding. Andrew and I bring the pop punk rhythmic element to the band. Ethan and Evan bring the emo/indie stylings to bring you the music we create today. 

Now you guys recently released your debut full length "Summer Death," about a month or so ago, how has the reception from your fans been regarding the album?

It’s been incredible. Not even one week after we released the record we played a show with Have Mercy and Caravels and it was quite evident some people just haven’t stopped listening to the record. I’m excited to play to kids from different area to see if we get the same reaction like we do here. Philly bands are spoiled with an incredibly supportive music community. New bands all get a solid chance to get their music heard with shows happening all the time and the DIY punks booking most of the shows. 

  So my personal favorite off the album has to be, "Cinco de mayo shit show," do you have a favorite off the album? Or one that you really enjoyed recording?

“Cinco” is definitely one of my favorites. But “Deck Wine” is definitely my favorite from the record. Those songs were also fun to record just because I simply love playing those songs. We wrote them a long time ago and I’m the most comfortable playing. Also recording gang vocals is just a really fun time. Everyone knows gang vocal day is the best day of recording.

  Are there any certain influences that you guys have that helped inspire some of your music?

I’m just the bassist, haha, but really I think I had to start writing differently when I joined this band. I only really knew how to play pop punk from my high school band. I can’t really answer for what influences Ethan or Evan but I know for sure Andrew just tries to use every cymbal in every song because Steve-O from Sum 41 did cool shit. 

Do you guys have any upcoming plans for your music in the next couple of months?

I keep telling Ethan and Evan to stop writing music but they just won’t! Being the creative little punks they are, we have been writing new music but don’t really have any plans on what we’ll use it for. 

& Before we wrap things all up, is there anything you guys would like to say to your fans and listeners?

Thanks for the continued support. Keep listening and sharing our music. Try it out on your dad. We still don’t have fans that are dads.
