Matthew E. White / One of These Days

Big Love – Matthew E. White

We were late to a Record Store Day show at Barrack Street in London. I broke three strings on the first song, then they got tangled around the mic stand so I couldn’t move, it was so cold our instruments wouldn’t stay in tune, my piano player’s piano was broken and Russell Crowe was watching.
Matthew E. White recounts his worst show ever for our FILTER 54 feature, Getting To Know: Matthew E. White.
2013 Favorites - Matthew E. White
Matthew E. White's Outer Face EP was written on the road after the release of his 2012 debut LP Big Inner, and White set strict guidelines for the recording process: no guitars, horns, or piano. The result is a pared down version of his folk-funk, with strings, bass, choir picking up the slack. "Signature Move" grooves snakily along with a funky, frenetic bass line and understated vocals.
Revving Up For Those Album Of The Year Type Things.
All the way back at the start of the year (February) I opined HERE that Matthew E White’s album “Big Inner” would probably be among my albums of the year.
Since when I have listened to it quite a bit, and seen him Live at both the Vivid festival and Glastonbury. I have to be honest I didn’t enjoy the live sets as much as I should have in spite of nice covers of Randy Newman (Sail Away) and Neil Young (Are You Ready For The Country). But the record is still a pleasure and “Brazos” is still a ripper tune.
So now I’m happy to find that he’s made a new EP to go with the bonus pack (the Outer Face edition) of the album. And it’s better again – being a country soul take on Dr John which has a slight flavour of Lambchop’s adventures playing Curtis Mayfield.
Here for your listening is the subtly great bassline of Hot Hot Hot
and, as if this isn’t good enough, as you get to the fuzz guitar (perfect!) break at the end White breaks into a repeated chant of “stay golden” (or so it sounds to my ears) which is surely a reference to THIS from the greatest teen movie of them all, SE Hinton’s “The Outsiders”.
So now one of the best albums of the year is 5 songs better and quite a bit funkier. And you stay Golden Matthew E White. You have delivered plenty in 2013.
