Sometimes you can just walk into a shop or restaurant and immediately get the sense that the owner/manager cares. I had that feeling when I walked into Big Softee. The shop smelled wonderful because they make their own waffle cones. They had cute signs ready for Instagram, adorable Big Softee mascot spoons and napkins, the Asian inspired soft serve flavors sounded amazing, and the customers and employees seemed happy. The place was clean, bright, and cheerful. They made sure that everyone received a beautiful swirl of soft serve.
Flavors of the day:
Pandan soymilk
Tofu flower
Chocolate Horlicks
Tahitian vanilla
Salted egg custard: creamy, custard flavor but it didn’t seem salty?
They only have two soft serve machines, so I’m not sure why five (vs. four flavors) were on the flavor board. Ask for samples. The soft serve comes in two sizes (Little $3.75, Big $4.50), then they have shakes, floats, sundaes, and drinks. The menu is in English and Chinese.
Toppings like cornflakes, toasted coconut, almond cookies and potato chips are 50 cents but sprinkles are free. Cute.
* Tofu flower soft serve w/ matcha dust ($4.50 + 50 cents for matcha): I was expecting this to taste like soy milk. It did, very much so, but it also had a spicy, zingy ginger flavor, because tofu flower pudding is often served with ginger syrup. This flavor was so good and the texture was thick and smooth. It was a tad sweet, but so is tofu flower the actual dessert. The matcha powder looked nice but I couldn’t taste it over the soy and ginger notes. The portion was generous and the soft serve was indulgent but didn’t seem too heavy.
I’m intrigued by the sound of their tofu shake and they seem to offer soy soft serve flavors on a regular basis. Yay!
Minor area for improvement: Most of the toppings seem standard. They could be more Asian and more exciting. Also, they open so late on Wednesdays and Thursdays; they open at 3 PM.
Credit cards are accepted. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
