This is a question that I ask myself every now and then when I think about my career. A similar term I like to use in Korean is "용의 꼬리, 뱀의 머리(Tail of a dragon, head of a snake)"
I've talked about this with a few people during the last few weeks, and it seems like the better choice is to go for the ocean.
Ocean is a place not everyone can go. Not everyone has the strength to go, and even if you had the chance, there seem to be certain windows of opportunity when you can make the change. If you decided to move to the ocean later in life, you will have to carry much more than you have now.
Seems like the answer is a bit obvious. Especially when you think about how easy it should be to move back to the pond compared to going out to the ocean. You should cherish every opportunity you get to move closer to the ocean and grab it when you can. You can always comeback as a bigger fish after you have grown enough in a bigger place.
But what troubles me is, why do I want to be big? If it is for happiness, what do I fundamentally lack so that I can not be happy as is? Why do I want to be something greater than I am now? Is it worth the struggle?
Another question is a more stupid one compared to the previous one. Am I worthy enough to go to the ocean? I am telling more and more people that I want to go to a bigger world, but am I just being cocky? I have to try to find out, but is my attempt justifiable? I feel this question(s) is stupid because there is really only one way to find out. I can say "Meh, I already know the answer" at some point, but all I will know from that moment on is that I have bailed out.
These are some answers I came up with on "Why do I want it?".
First, the question of "am I worth it?" and the paradoxically obvious answer to the question "Only one way to find out" answers the bigger question. I want to try it so I can know if I am worthy in the ocean.
Second, I am fortunate to have many people who appreciates my abilities. The downside is, I feel more and more miserable for not achieving what they say I "could have". Of course I should try it if I am exclusively capable of it, otherwise, I am living the opportunity on the table.
But in all honesty, I just want to be happy, and I'm not sure I can peacefully settle without knowing what I could've done. I am just a miserably confused person who doesn't know what will lead to happiness.
