It is not at all necessary to read the first book though it is just as lovely. There was more of a narrative in this one though so I felt that there was a better smoother flow in the telling. Still, it is one that you'd want to read slowly so you can appreciate and absorb the many good bits. With all the beautiful illustrations and lovely short paragraphs, it is easily Re-Read-able. And you'd probably want to to return to for comfort, assurance. In each different phase of life, you'd glean something different each time. So many brilliant life phrases I could have quoted but I'll let you find these gems yourself. Seeing that it's less than 2 months to Christmas, I can recommend this one as an enchanting Christmas gift. This could be read over and over OR makes a cute coffee table book.
