Tasting: Mengku “Big Snow Mountain” Black Dragon Ball

Now this was just an extraordinary little treat! I ordered this little dragon ball, simply so my order would be enough to qualify for a large ripe puerh cake. I was not expecting it to be in anyway as amazing as what was to come. This little dragon ball is a hand rolled version of the loose leaf tea of the same name. It comes from Big Snow Mountain area of Mengku in Lincang.

The wet leaf after washing the tea I found to be sweet and slightly tart almost like a sour cherry.

The first infusion had an incredible, thick, and robust flavor with notes of honey, toffee and a slight woodys musk. Very little astringency which was surprising for such a deep, rich black tea. The flavors of honey and toffee remained prominent in the second and third infusion, with sweet honey taking center stage the more the tea was steeped.

For something so small and inexpensive I purchased just to get something for free, it delivered on so many levels. This little dragon ball came out of nowhere and surpassed any and all expectations I had for it. And deserving so I am giving this little dragon ball a 5 out of 5 star rating. I will for sure be purchasing some more of these dragon balls, and perhaps even the loose leaf version.
